Chippenham Tri Club Records Huge Success in June
The newly formed Chippenham Tri Club is already making great strides with the club celebrating excellent results for both juniors and seniors during June.
Four of the club’s young athletes travelled to Tockington Manor School on Saturday 20th June to compete against around 200 others at the North Bristol Children’s Triathlon, an event where children from the age of eight and above take part in cycling, swimming and running races of varying distances.
In the TriStars 1 category, which comprised of a 100m swim, 1.6km cycle and 0.8km run, Harry Maxwell (aged 8) finished in 7th place, just two places ahead of twin brother Joshua in 9th. Mitchel Mason (aged 9) finished in a very respectable 15th place.
Molly Dunstone (aged 10) finished the older Tristars 2 category in 13th place where she raced over distances of 200m, 3.2km, and 1.6km.
The previous weekend, adult club member Chris Maxwell excelled at the Deva Triathlon - an Olympic distance triathlon held in the centre of Chester. Currently in its 16th year, the event is important as it incorporates the Triathlon England Championships. Chris Maxwell recorded a personal best time of 2 hours 4 minutes for the Olympic distance 1.5km swim (in the river Dee), 40km bike, and 10km run. This excellent time put him 7th in the 40-44 age group in the English Championships and means he qualifies for the World Triathlon Championships in Chicago in September, as well as the 2016 European Champs in Lisbon.
On June 12th, Richard Schofield completed the Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire, winning the 50-54 age group to qualify for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Austria in August.
Chris Maxwell, Chair of the Chippenham Triathlon Club said “This really has been a spectacular month for the club. To have two members qualify for international events is fantastic news, and the performance of our younger members shows just how much fresh young talent we are lucky to have. Our youngsters have bright futures in the sport, but we shouldn’t overlook the fantastic achievement of Richard Schofield whose result in the Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire shows how the Chippenham Triathlon Club is a club for all ages.”
