Travelling Around Swindon in Wiltshire County
Visiting Swindon? Or just fancy a day trip around our beautiful town? Here are a few tourist attractions to visit while you're here.
Among the many incredible cities for people with curious minds to visit, we believe Swindon should rank pretty well on that list. Located in the UK's Wiltshire County, the large town is known for its historical sites and lovely natural scenery. If you're fortunate enough to travel there, you'll find a diverse assortment of sights and activities to enjoy year round. Here are some interesting things to do in Swindon and its surroundings.
Stonehenge
Too famous to not visit it - This world famous monument dates back to prehistoric times and is one of the most intriguing mysteries in the world. How did it get there and who made it? You're much more likely to win big playing on Wintingo casino than you are figuring out the answers to those questions, as no one has been able to nail down the exact history of this English icon. It's been a World Heritage site since 1986 and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area each year.
Lydiard Park
If you enjoy visiting parks or are looking for family friendly activities in Swindon, head to Lydiard Park. It sits on 260 beautiful acres of land and has been in existence since well before the 12th century. The park itself has played a role in various key points in UK history, and has undergone several restorations. On the grounds of the park is Lydiard House, a stately manor with impressive architecture that now operates as a museum open to the public.
Barbury Castle
The UK is full of castles, but Barbury Castle doesn't look anything like what you'd expect. It's a hill fort from the Iron Age that sits along what's known as the Ridgway route. Today Barbury Castle is a park and it's visited by residents and guests in Swindon. However, thousands of years ago Barbury Castle was used as important grounds during a time when Rome occupied the area.
Haydon Meadow
Swindon has several sites that will pique the interest of anyone who likes to study nature, including Haydon Meadow. Also known to locals as Clifford Meadow, it is a home to a very rare species of orchid that's protected and not seen in many other places. Guests can tour the grounds and get a look at the remarkable flowers and wildlife there.
Wyvern Theatre
This theater has a grand auditorium and was named for a mythical creature that used to be an emblem associated with the kings of Wessex. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip oversaw the opening of Wyvern Theatre in 1971, and since then it has gone through a number of changes and hosted remarkable performances. It closed in 2006 for renovation and reopened the following year sporting comfy new seating, attractive decor, and bars and cafes. It's one of the premiere venues in Swindon for fans of performing arts, and shows are scheduled there year round. Lines for tickets can get long, but you can hop on Wintingo casino to play fun games while you wait.
Museum of the Great Western Railway
Whether you call it the Museum of the Great Western Railway or the Swindon Steam Railway Museum, what's certain is this is a truly fascinating establishment. Visitors can see full size locomotives and displays detailing the history of the railway industry during its heyday in Swindon. There are also artifacts and equipment highlighted in the museum's many exhibits.
