Let's Talk
Swindon Lives: Josh Kumra
Ahead of his performance at The Best of Swindon concert this May. Local singer-songwriter Josh Kumra kindly took some time out to have a quick chat with us!
What made you want to get involved with The Best Of Swindon concert?
To tell you the truth I was really honoured to be asked; I've always love playing in my home town! The show has a great line up and I’m really excited to be a part of it.
Apart from the obvious, what’s your favourite type of music?
I can't really give you straight answer on this as i listen and enjoy many different types of music. One thing that does stand out for me is emotive voices and lyrics; anything that changes the way i feel is a winner in my books.
If you could duet with any singer, who would it be?
I would love to do a duet with Ray Lamontagne. I think he has a great voice and i believe everything he sings about even though I know it’s not all true!
Describe your act in three words…
Emotive, dynamic, FUN!
What is your favourite track to perform?
The Answer, it’s the song that i feel most connected to the audience. I feel that people really listen to the lyrics and are normally silent, so it’s a great atmosphere.
A gig to a large crowd, or a small, intimate performance?
Any gig is a fun gig, my preference changes along the way but if i had to choose one, it would be a large crowd. There’s no better feeling than 5000 people singing along to every word you sing!
What sets you apart from the rest?
I think there are so many great talented artists out at the moment. I’m just doing my thing trying to put 110% into everything I do. I like to stay true to myself and be proud of everything I make. I can also do a great moonwalk!
If you could give one piece of advice to budding artists, what would it be?
I would say that the most important thing is to enjoy every minute of writing, performing and struggling. Not everything is going to go your way but if you stay positive and focused something good will come!
Who is your idol and why?
Musically my idol is Ray Lamontagne. I think he sings with honesty and draws you into every word he says.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
My dad always supported me through my music from the age of 13 and he's always told me to stay grounded which I think is crucial. He also said that it’s important that you’re proud of everything you put out.
