Swindon Town's assistant boss Ben Futcher not concerned about a fixture pile-up

Following Swindon's 1-0 win over Wycombe in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night, Town assistant manager Ben Futcher insisted more games for Swindon can only be a good thing.

Matt Preston's 88th-minute header got Swindon their first win from their second group stage match of this year's EFL Trophy and, as a result, they have a winner-takes-second match at the Memorial Stadium in their third and final contest.

West Ham's Academy lead the group on six points and are through, Bristol Rovers and Swindon have three each while Wycombe are without a point and are out.

The EFL Trophy is in its second year as a competition and it controversially includes Premier League and Championship B-teams, which has led to a mass boycott of supporters since its inception last year. Only 1,236 were in attendance last night.

Futcher is glad to have the competition as part of his schedule, however, as he sees it as a great chance to get some squad players much-needed minutes under their belt.

Swindon made seven changes last night. Reice Charles-Cook kept his place in goal while Preston, James Dunne and Keshi Anderson were all retained from Saturday's 3-0 win at Port Vale.

Right-back Kyle Knoyle also made his debut for the club and played the full 90 minutes.

"While we're in the competition we want to do as well as we can in it, it's an opportunity to play some other players in competitive football so, as you've seen tonight, it gives some of the lads who've not played regularly, like Kyle Knoyle, who's come in for his first start," Futcher said.

"It's good for them players, we always want to be competitive and we always want to win but at times you do have to make those changes, you can't keep playing the same players all the time because you will get burnout, that's how you get injuries.

"We have mixed it up, but the lads that have came in have done a really good job.

"This kind of tournament has its benefits. When Ham['s academy] came here I thought we had a good game, I thought it was quite entertaining [in the] second half tonight for the fans that came."

Futcher is also not concerned of a fixture pile-up, should Swindon make it to the latter stages of the Trophy.

"No, not at all really. We kind of know the fixtures there and, as I say, it gives other players an opportunity like it's done tonight.

"We said to them before the game we expected them to take the opportunity and they all did, they were fantastic and we won, we got a clean sheet, it keeps the momentum going.

"We're trying to create a winning culture, it's just another chance to do that, that's three wins on the spin, we had a young team tonight, I think a lot of the players are under 24 so that's fantastic for the football club, we've got some assets.

"It was a really good chance for the players to showcase what they could do and they've done that well."
