Marathon man Greg Wells to tackle London's iconic race for NSPCC

Local long distance runner Greg Wells is tackling the London Marathon to raise money for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), taking on the pinnacle of the United Kingdom's running scene.

Greg started running back in 2013 after being encouraged by work colleagues, and has since completed 91 park runs, eight half marathons and two 10k events.

After being bit by the running bug, Greg has become addicted to pushing himself while also raising money for fantastic causes along the way.

It will be the second time the 51-year-old has tackled the iconic London Marathon route after successfully completing the course in 2015.

Taking to the streets of the capital, Greg will be raising money for the NSPCC, a cause he feels passionately about.

"I saw an advert for the NSPCC a few years back, and it really touched me, it struck a chord with me," Greg said.

"It was so sad and you realise how good a charity they are that I was determined to help. I started doing bucket collections and making bird boxes and it started from there," he added.

Speaking of his previous London Marathon endeavour, Greg said: "The London marathon was an amazing experience.

"I remember the energy coming from the crowds and how good it felt at the start to be running along such a beautiful route, so I’m looking forward to experiencing that all over again."

Greg works as a health and safety director at the Stratton based contracting firm NKS, and uses his running as an outlet and a means of unwinding.

"I think people may think I’m mad, certainly a few people have told me that but I love the adrenaline rush you get from running, it’s a way you can forget about the world for a while and any troubles you might have," Greg said.

Greg's efforts have not gone unnoticed by the NSPCC themselves, who have openly praised his fantastic efforts and 'superhuman' approach.

NSPCC fundraising manager Caroline Morgan said: "Greg has been outstanding in his support for us, doing his training for London, working full time, and also being a family man but he has raised thousands for the charity well over his target of £2200.

"Greg has done this in a number of ways and always with a big smile on his face and passion in his heart to help children. I think he is superhuman," she added.

Greg has already smashed his target and is well on the way to achieving £4000. To support Greg you can make a pledge at his Virgin Money fundraising page here or visit his London Marathon Facebook page here.
