Go Westley! New boy Joe nets winner on Swindon Town debut
Manager Ian Holloway expressed his delight for new recruit Joe Westley after he came off the bench to net the winner for Swindon Town against Newport County.
Town fell behind to Kyle Hudlin’s 12th-minute goal at Rodney Parade before Harry Smith levelled just three minutes later.
And Westley, who came on to replace Tom Nichols just past the hour mark, popped up with the winner to make it 2-1 to Town 15 minutes from time.
Signed on loan from Burnley on Thursday, Westley, the son of former Newport County boss Graham Westley, struck on his EFL debut for the Robins.
Holloway said: "I am delighted for the new lad to come on and score us the winner. I couldn't have written it better for him.
"I am really pleased with everybody at the club, especially the fans with how many there were here and that is a big win for us.
"I think that is 17 in 19 he has got this year and he is prolific, so I want him to come here and do what he wants to do and play off the back of defenders and learn that he can do it at a higher level, and he showed that."
Victory put Town 16th in League Two, 11 points clear of the relegation places.
"They went in front but I thought that we started really well and then what a reply, the lads don't like going behind anymore,” said Holloway.
"I am challenging them to see what we can do in the most important week of my life so far.
"I think that this week could change everything that we are hoping for but we have got to earn that right and that was a fantastic performance. I was really pleased with everybody.
"What an atmosphere, their fans were singing but at the end it was our fans who were singing and that is what counts."
Next up for Town is a home game against Tranmere on Tuesday (7.45pm).
