Gunning admits Swindon conceded 'two rubbish goals' in defeat at Newport County

Interim head coach Gavin Gunning admitted “bad habits” crept in during Swindon Town’s 2-1 defeat at Newport County, with “two rubbish goals” conceded.

Having taken the lead through Paul Glatzel just after half-time at Rodney Parade, Town were unable to see out the contest and fell to their 13th league loss of the campaign.

Speaking to the club website after the reverse, Gunning said: “Don’t get me wrong, the performance was there.

“But the bad habits creep in a little bit and we concede two rubbish goals, which is not where we want to get to.

“But hopefully the people get a picture of where we can go going forward, and that’s obviously a lot better. The performance is key, I think.

“If we’d have performed rubbish and come away with a 2-1 defeat then you are kind of scratching your head.

“But to have a performance like that and then get the old suckerpunches in. We switch off from the corner which is criminal but it happens sometimes.

“The second goal, I think we just dropped too deep to be honest but it’s unfortunate.”

Town came close to opening the scoring when Dawson Devoy hit the post from a free-kick on the angle.

Just after the break, the visitors gained the advantage. A long ball over the top was latched on to by striker Glatzel, who applied a cool finish for his first goal in Swindon Town colours.

But Town were undone via a set-piece just seven minutes later. A neat short corner routine from County allowed Will Evans the opportunity to tap in his 20th goal of the campaign.

And with 16 minutes remaining, the Exiles sealed their winner.

After Swindon failed to fully deal with a ball from deep, Seb Palmer-Houlden was played in and slotted into the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

Swindon are now 17th in League Two. They host Salford City in their next league encounter at the County Ground on Saturday (3pm).
