Gavin Gunning wants to give the fans some excitement in the final game of the season

Gavin Gunning said he wants to bring the fun back to the County Ground with his time in interim charge. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the interim head coach ahead of Town’s last game of the season.

Following the departure of Jody Morris as head coach on 1st May, Gunning is in interim charge of the first team for the second time this season as Scott Lindsey returns to the County Ground with Crawley Town.

Gunning said he was hoping to give the fans some excitement in the game and to end the season on a high.

He said: “I am hoping it is going to be a big crowd and be positive. With Scott [Lindsey] coming back, I am not sure what kind of reaction he will get, but he did a decent job here and I would hope that the fans would be respectful.

“All we want to do is perform really well, play at a high tempo, and make it an enjoyable game.

“We want to get people off their seats and make sure it is enjoyable and win the game, that is what football is about.

“If you win games you are a good coach, and if you lose games then you are a bad coach, that is basically all that matters.

“I have never heard of someone being called a good coach when they are losing games.

“The last game of the season is always a good atmosphere; you want to end on a positive and bring that momentum through to the start of next year.

“You don’t want to be ending on a damp squib because then you are trying to find your way through the off-season.

“But if you have that win and the lads perform really well then they fill in the blanks for you on where you are going forward.”

Gunning said that a lot more design went into Swindon scoring eight goals in two games under him during his brief spell in interim charge back in January than merely using a laissez-faire attitude.

He said: “That didn’t happen [simply taking the handbrake off], there was a lot more work that went into those games.

“You can’t just beat Grimsby 5-0 without a lot of work going into it.

“Obviously against Gillingham it went unbelievable to start, then it all went Pete Tong, we changed everything at half-time and then we should have won the game.

“Should’ve, would’ve, could’ve is football, it all levels itself out at the end of the season.

“I hope there will be a lot of goals [against Crawley], you would take the Grimsby score, wouldn’t you?”
