Luke Williams "keeps trying to work out what is so appealing" to forcing attacks

Swindon head coach Luke Williams says he still needs educating on the reasons to go gung-ho against defensive opposition.

Swindon Town were held to a 1-1 draw by play-off chasing Fleetwood that have struggled on their travels this season.

Both sides only managed two shots on target each: the two goals, Michael Doughty's saved penalty and a second Fleetwood effort.

Sounds of exasperation emanated from the home crowd towards the end of the second half as Swindon failed to grab a crucial second goal to earn the hosts a third straight home win.

At full-time though, Williams addressed the frustrations of the fans in his post-match press conference.

"I personally don't understand why you would want to attack really quickly into a deep defence," he said.

"I keep trying to work out what is so appealing to that, to force the players to try to go headlong into an eight-man block, I'm still trying to get my head around it.

"Maybe someone will help educate me about how to attack a team that are banked up against you. I'm still not at the level where I understand that.

"But I think the boys tried to manouvere the ball side-to-side to try and open up gaps in a fit defence and try to thread it through to an attacking player to get in on the half-turn and to be able to damage the opponent.

"Credit to Fleetwood. They thought the had the chance to get the point instead of being more ambitious to try and get all three and they decided to stick close together to be deep and to protect the goal a lot and they did that really well."

Despite only getting a draw, Williams believes the display of his side should be one Swindon should use as a catalyst going forward.

"We should take confidence from the performance. I think we did enough to win the game and I think we can look to build on that.

"It's difficult (to concede so early after scoring) because you want to compose yourself and of course the opposition struck back and took the wind out of our sails but I think we did enough to warrant winning the game.

"We are not predictable. I think when the opposition try to press us high up the pitch we've got an answer and then we can try and control the ball for large periods of the game. We just needed to get the ball over the line and then I think we would have gone on to win comfortably."

Meanwhile, the short-term deal Rhys Sharpe signed earlier this month has been confirmed by the man himself to be one that lasts until January.
