OPPOSITION INSIGHT: Millwall FC

Ahead of Swindon Town's hosting of Millwall tomorrow (13:30 kick-off), Total Sport spoke to John Kelly of the News at Den to get the lowdown on the Lions.

1) Millwall got to the play-off final last season in their first year back in League One, do you think the Lions will be heading back to Wembley again this year and, if so, does this team stand more of a chance than last season?

"Given the quality of their squad, particularly the front two of Lee Gregory and Steve Morison, they should get top six.

"I'd fancy them then against any of the sides in the play-offs, and as well as last season's experience they have the benefit of having won five FA Cup fixtures this season.

"Millwall lost the 2009 League One play-off final before winning it the following year, so good omens and all that..."

2) Should Millwall reach the Championship at the second time of asking, how much improvement in terms of recruitment would the club need in order to survive?

A lot. There's not a whole lot of pace in the team, especially at the back. Jake Cooper and Jed Wallace are on loan and the club would like to agree permanent deals for them.

"They'd need at least a striker, winger and left-back all with real pace."

3) The club went on an impressive FA Cup run this campaign, reaching the quarter-final. Has this been more of a help or a hindrance to the domestic campaign?

"I looked at Wycombe's record before and after they lost to Tottenham in an earlier round. They were unbeaten in 16 games before they went to White Hart Lane but have won just three of 13 since then.

"Millwall were unbeaten in 17 but since they lost to Spurs they have drawn against two sides they would have expected to beat. It's not that there's a definite pattern there but it could indicate that, for all the the talk that a cup run is a pleasant distraction, there's definitely a sense that once all the excitement ends it can deflate things and take away a bit of the energy.

"There's also the fact that they now have more midweek games and a more cramped fixture list, with six of their nine games away from home between now and April 30.

"Goalkeeper Jordan Archer and striker Steve Morison picked up injuries in the win over Leicester that kept them out for six and three games, so that didn't help.

"They did climb into the top six during the cup run, but the real indicator as to whether it helped or not will be better assessed based on how they do in games like Saturday's, which again they should be winning. "

4) Ahead of both meetings between Swindon and Millwall this season, Luke Williams has bigged-up the strike partnership of Steve Morison and Lee Gregory.  Would you say those two are the best forward duo in League One?

"I think they are. They've scored 30 goals between them despite both missing chunks of the season. Morison is superb in the air, the best in the division, and that's crucial given Millwall are a direct side.

"Gregory missed two late penalties in the 0-0 draw at Oldham, but showed his bottle by scoring three from the spot in the five games since then, with two of them directly leading to three points."

5) Away from on-the-pitch matters briefly. Earlier this year there was talk of Millwall being moved from their home of the Den, to Kent, which caused uproar among its fanbase, what are the latest developments in that regard?

"The threat has still not gone away.

"The developer, Renewal, has invested a lot of time and money in accumulating land for development and I doubt they're going to give up without a fight.

"There are also historical and current links between Lewisham Council and Renewal (that information is publicly available).

"The Council seemed set to push through the compulsory purchase order of land around The Den until, mainly through the investigation work of the supporters group, Millwall AMS, more and more murky details of the potential deal were uncovered and there was a rising tide of anger on social media.

"That and other troubling aspects such as the threat to Millwall's academy caused Lewisham to postpone a CPO decision. This is one that could drag on for a long time yet."

6) Back to the football. What is the Millwall team news ahead of Saturday?

"A fully fit squad, so manager Neil Harris could choose to freshen things up if he wants. It'll be 4-4-2 and not far away from if not this starting XI: Archer; Cummings, Webster, Cooper, Craig; Wallace, Thompson, Williams, O'Brien; Gregory, Morison."

7) And, finally, are you confident of Millwall's chances at the County Ground?

"Relatively, but they need to show they're fully back on track in the league and conceding three at Rochdale was a one-off or rare defensive blip. I reckon Millwall to win 3-1."
