ON-THE-WHISTLE MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town 1-2 Scunthorpe

Swindon Town were officially relegated from League One, as Murray Wallace's early goal and a Sam Mantom strike secured a 2-1 win for Scunthorpe.

The defeat, as well as Bury's 3-0 home win over Northampton, confirmed that Swindon will be playing League Two next season, as Town have been relegated from the third tier for the first time in six years.

Pre-match angst and nervousness became acceptance as early as the fifth minute when defender Murray Wallace bundled in the opener for the Iron.

David Mirfin's cross was not properly gathered by player-of-the-season Lawrence Vigouroux, the ball then struck Wallace and flew into the back of the net for 1-0 Scunthorpe and it set Swindon on the relegation path.

Substitute Sam Mantom finished the game off in the 71st minute to completely end any hope and got Town's League Two preparation underway.

James Vaughan's second-minute strike at Gigg Lane that put Bury 1-0 up against Northampton, when the Shakers only needed a draw to confirm Town's fate, had Swindon staring into the abyss.

The mood at the County Ground noticeably swung. Booes greeted mis-placed passes, a few fans were escorted out of the ground for shouting at the dugout and loud chants of "We want (chairman Lee) Power out" could be heard.

In terms of match action, visitors Scunthorpe showed why they are trying to get out of the division in the correct way by peppering the Town goal.

Vigouroux made a smart, diving stop to keep out a well-struck Josh Morris free-kick before Morris fired a shot just wide after skipping away from Dion Conroy.

Swindon were limited to long-range efforts from striker Jon Obika.

Before the half-time whistle Obika had two efforts on the goal - the first one was deflected wide and the second was tipped past the post by goalkeeper Joe Anyon. Neither corners troubled Scunthorpe's goal.

Scunthorpe threatened twice more before the half-time break, Morris hit the bar with an ambitious effort and Ivan Toney had a shot easily saved by Vigouroux.

The Robins did not offer a great more in the second half either. Obika, again, tried his luck from range - saved again but Swindon never really looked like saving their League One status for another year, or even week.

Swindon did have something to cheer about late on though when, in the 86th minute, Rohan Ince cracked in a superb shot from distance to restore the tiniest bit of pride.

Ince almost somehow snatched a point for Swindon a few seconds later when he had a second go from a long way out, but this one went just wide.
