ON-THE-WHISTLE MATCH REPORT: Swindon 3-0 Charlton

An own goal by David Fox, Lloyd Jones' effort and a Johnny Goddard strike gave Swindon Town their first win in five matches to lift the Robins out of the League One relegation zone.

Swindon's first two goals were just at the right time, with the first one coming three minutes before the half-time break, and the second arrived five minutes into the second period.

In the 42nd minute, Sean Murray had an effort from the edge of the box after a neat passing move featuring Michael Doughty and Johnny Goddard set up the ex-Watford man and his shot that was going wide was deflected by Fox into the goal.

Town's lead was doubled on the 50-minute mark when Liverpool loanee Lloyd Jones broke free of his marker from a corner and fired a low shot past Charlton goalkeeper Declan Rudd.

Johnny Goddard completed the scoring with four minutes left easily after he was played in by Yaser Kasim on the counter attack, and Goddard composed himself in acres of space and lashed the ball past a despairing Rudd.

Goddard, who was lively throughout the match, had the Robins' first real effort after he jinked past Jason Pearce, but he could not make proper contact on his shot and it dribbled wide.

The first shot on target, for either side, did not come until the 33rd minute when Murray had a shot that was easily stopped by Rudd.

Two minutes later he was called into action again as Norris' shot was parried and Charlton cleared just before Murray could seize on the rebound.

In the second half, Swindon almost had a third when Doughty's superb low cross was aimed towards Norris, but the £150,000 signing from Gillingham just could not get a toe on it.

It really should have been 3-0 in the 79th minute. Substitute Nathan Delfouneso put captain Kasim in the clear, who had a shot saved, and then Doughty pounced on the rebound, but his shot was blocked, and then Murray's header sailed into the arms of Rudd.

Charlton were limited to half chances.

Lee Novak and Patrick Bauer both headed over from corners, while former Swindon striker Nicky Ajose failed to get a proper foothold on the game at his old stomping ground and ironic chants of "we've had a shot" came from the Charlton end.

Swindon's next match is at home to Eastleigh in the FA Cup first round replay on Tuesday night.
