Level Water Swimming Lessons a Success in Swindon
Level Water provides free swimming lessons for children with physical and sensory disabilities. Better Swindon have partnered with Level Water to be able to offer one-to-one and small group swimming lessons for Swindon children with disabilities, many of whom would never learn to swim without these lessons.
The lessons are for primary aged children and are provided for up to a year, then giving them a lifetime of access to sport. Children on the lessons work towards being able to swim 15m front crawl and backstroke or being ready to join mainstream classes. Many children also go on to join a local competitive swimming club.
Tegan (8) of Lethbridge Primary School is one of the Swindon children currently on the Level Water swimming lessons at Better Oasis Leisure Centre. Tegan attends one-to-one swimming lessons once a week with Rhona. Tegan’s Mum Kelly said “The Level Water team have been brilliant and Rhona has done an amazing job building Tegan's confidence and getting her to be able to swim independently. Tegan has come so far since her first lesson.”
Cheryl Pottinger, Sports Programme and Events Manager for Better Swindon, said “Level Water has allowed us to teach 14 disabled children to swim in the last year, which is an amazing opportunity. 2 of the swimmers have gone on to join local competitive swimming clubs. All of them have done brilliantly and the lessons have had an impact on their overall wellbeing.”
Speaking about Level Water, seven times World Record holder Mark Foster said: “Disabled children need a fair start to reach their potential. Level Water is that start.
