Two Loan Signings To Stay At STFC Says Richie Wellens

RICHIE WELLENS has revealed that two of his current loan signings are expected to stay at Swindon Town until the end of the season with one player set to see his loan deal out and another to sign for the club on a permanent deal. Total Sport Swindon’s Ryan Walker spoke to the team manager at today’s pre-match press conference ahead of the weekend fixture against Bradford City.

Having entered the New Year, Swindon Town now faces the realistic possibility of losing some of their biggest assets with the league’s top striker Eoin Doyle, midfielder Anthony Grant, and youthful striker Jerry Yates all facing being recalled by their parent clubs during the January transfer window.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Wellens gave an update on the clubs transfers and revealed that two loan players will be staying at the County Ground until the end of the season with one player set to have his deal turned into a permanent move at SN1.

“We are close to turning one of our loan signings into a permanent deal,” said Wellens.

“You're going to ask me who it is but it’s not fully done yet so I’m not going to tell you.

“In terms of our loans it will help us massively. There are two different deals going on.

“ One will remain on loan, that’s a verbal agreement at the moment though,” he said.

“We have agreed with them that throughout the breakout clause in the contract they will not call him back and he will stay for the season.

“The other player is currently a loan player but will hopefully be permanent.

“We need to get the Bradford game out the way first, then his contract kicks in and we get the deal done on the permanent,” he added.

“That will help us with our loan signings.

“Wait and see, we will announce it in a couple of days,” said Wellens.

Having confirmed the news that certain loan players will be staying with the club, Wellens explained that having a strong core squad means he doesn’t need to sell players to free up money but did state that some players may leave the club on loan during January.

“We won’t be selling anyone on a permanent deal, not unless we get a big offer from someone,” stated Wellens.

“A few of the younger players may go out on loan but it will be the younger lads. We have got ourselves into a position where we are quite strong.

“We’re getting more fans than we thought we would get so the money is coming in which might allow us to keep a couple of extra bodies,” he said.

Richie Wellens also gave an update on the contractual situations of Paul Caddis and Dion Donohue, with the STFC manager explaining that Caddis is expected to sign a new deal, but that there is little to update on the possibility of signing full-back Dion Donohue.

“There is no news on Dion Donohue yet,” said Wellens.

“We hope to still sign him but it is what is at the moment. There is no point signing someone who can’t actually register and can’t play.

“We will just have to wait and see what happens.

“I think Paul Caddis is going to sign an extension this afternoon for a minimum of until the end of this season,” he said.

“We will then put things in place for him to be here next season.

“I think he’s been brilliant. He’s come in and knows the game and his decision-making is very good,” added Wellens.
