Through the ages: Swindon Town v Walsall

SWINDON TOWN will be looking to register three wins in a row as they welcome a struggling Walsall to the County Ground on Saturday. Total Sport Swindon's Rajan Hothi takes a look at three memorable encounters between the two.

There have been 98 meetings between Swindon and the Saddlers, with Town winning 35 of these clashes. We pick our three most memorable encounters between the two.

1.) Walsall 1-4 Swindon Town - League One, 26th December 2014

A Boxing Day masterclass from Mark Cooper's side saw Swindon go within one point of league-leaders Bristol City as they ran riot at Walsall.

Michael Smith got Town off to a flyer after just three minutes with a smart finish from Nathan Byrne's cross, but Tom Bradshaw restored parity for the hosts just 15 minutes later.

Massimo Luongo put Town back ahead shortly after half-time as he fired home at the near-post.

Smith then turned provider for Andy Williams who dinked O'Donnell to make it 3-1 as Town started to dominate.

Williams bagged his brace six minutes later, stabbing home from close-range, following an excellent pass from Smith, to complete a memorable day in the snow at the Banks Stadium.

2.) Swindon Town 1-1 Walsall - League Two, 5th May 2007

Going into the final day of the 2006/07 season, Walsall were looking to wrap up the League Two title as they came into the clash joint-top with Hartlepool.

Swindon, on the other hand, needed just a point to secure promotion ahead of MK Dons in front of a packed-out County Ground.

Jerel Ifil's header after 52 minutes put Swindon ahead and it looked like Walsall would lose out on the title until a late Ricky Lambert goal for Bristol Rovers at Hartlepool saw Walsall return to the summit of the division.

A 90th-minute equaliser from Dean Keates saw the Saddlers earn a point and win the title, while Town finished in 3rd spot as both sides celebrated on the County Ground pitch at full-time.

3.) Swindon Town 1-1 Walsall - Division Two, 9th March 1996

Steve McMahon's Swindon were running riot in Division Two and entered the Walsall game five points ahead of second and third place Blackpool and Crewe, with games in hand over the pair.

Strugglers Walsall came to SN1 and did well to frustrate Swindon who were struggling to break the Saddlers defence down.

However, the deadlock was broken when Shaun Taylor headed home in the 84th minute to put Town on course for a valuable win, but in the 90th minute, Scott Houghton capitalised on some poor Swindon defending to give Walsall a share of the spoils.

Thankfully for Swindon, Crewe had slipped up at home to Bristol Rovers and lost 2-1, but a Blackpool win meant Town's lead at the top was cut to three points.
