Swindon Town set to have transfer embargo imposed

SWINDON TOWN could have an immediate transfer embargo placed upon them by the EFL if the governing body finds supportive evidence that players and staff at the club haven’t been paid by owner Lee Power. Total Sport Swindon's Ryan Walker reports below.

It was reported earlier this morning that players and staff at Swindon Town FC haven’t been paid for June as ongoing problems regarding a takeover of the club between current owner Lee Power and potential buyer Clem Morfuni continue to be thrashed out.

Total Sport Swindon approached the EFL for a statement earlier this afternoon, however, whilst the governing body refused to provide a statement, they did highlight the regulations in place before confirming that if they found evidence that any salaries haven’t been paid then an immediate transfer embargo would be placed on the club. 

Unfortunately, the EFL are unable to confirm if they have already placed a transfer embargo on Swindon Town with it being at the club’s discretion to announce this. Total Sport Swindon have approached STFC for comment.

Under section 53.1 of the EFL’s rules and regulations regarding the failure of payment to players, they state:

If following written notification from the Professional Footballers’ Association, a Club is found to be in default of any payment due in accordance with a Player's contract or payment in consequence of termination of such contract, The League may place an embargo on any transfer of any registration by such Club until the payment is made.

If any breach of regulations is confirmed then the case would be put to a commission who can impose further restrictions on Swindon Town including points deductions and in extreme circumstances expelling the Robins from the Football League.

There is no timescale on future punishments being imposed with the commission making decisions on a case-by-case basis.

Total Sport Swindon have also approached The PFA for comment.
