Swindon Town land talented Tottenham defender Marcel Lavinier

Swindon Town have agreed a deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur full-back Marcel Lavinier on a permanent deal from the Premier League club for an undisclosed fee. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam reports on the signing.

The 21-year-old right-back arrives at the County Ground and becomes Town’s 16th signing of the window having reportedly been subject to interest from Hull City during this summer transfer window.

Lavinier came through the ranks at Chelsea, where he played for England at under-15, under-16 and under-17 level, before making the switch to North London in 2020, where he has already made his debut in February 2021 as a second half substitute for Matt Doherty in Spurs’ 4-0 Europa League victory over Wolfsburger AC.

Reports from Football Insider suggest that Lavinier, who is yet to feature for the Tottenham under-21s so far this season, rejected a contract extension at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with his current deal set to expire next summer.

Lavinier spoke to club media upon the completion of his move: “I’m absolutely buzzing to be here and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity. I had a really good chat with the manager upon joining the club and this is a really exciting project to be a part of.

“I knew as soon as I’d spoken to Scott and his team this was where I wanted to play my football and it’s the ideal place for me to showcase what I can do.”

Scott Lindsey said of his new addition: “Having Marcel on board is fantastic for the football club and I’m really looking forward to seeing him in a Swindon shirt.

“He a product of a great footballing academy, is a good age and an all-round quality player, so it’s great that he sees the next steps of his career with us here at SN1.”

Technical Director Sandro Di Michele added: “Marcel is a fantastic signing for us and is exactly the profile of player we want at this football club.

“He’s a young attacking full back with superb pedigree having spent time at Chelsea and Spurs.

“He handles the ball brilliantly, has incredible energy and will be a real asset for us moving forward.

“I’m incredibly excited to see him play in a Swindon Town shirt.”
