Swindon Town 0-1 Brentford
A second half stunner from Clayton Donaldson condemned Town to a disappointing defeat at the hands of Brentford on Tuesday night.
The hosts started sluggishly and though they created some good chances, they could have had no complaints as the Bees powered their way to a deserved three points.
Uwe Rosler’s side nearly took the lead within the first ten minutes as eventual matchwinner Donaldson stung the gloves of Wes Foderingham from 20 yards.
This was the only sight of goal either side had until the 42nd minute when Town frontman Chris Martin found Bees ‘keeper Simon Moore in defiant mood; the stopper batting away his 25-yard drive.
The Norwich loanee went close again moments later, volleying towards goal from close range only to find too many bodies in the way as his drive was deflected clear of danger.
Town started the second period brightly and were inches away from going in front after 55 minutes as Jay McEveley fired a pinpoint cross into the box which Simon Ferry nodded inches wide.
But they were made to pay a few minutes later as Paul Hayes picked out Donaldson who found a yard of space on the edge of the box before hammering the ball home past Foderingham.
Paolo Di Canio’s side were evidently rocked by the goal, and struggled to regain any sort of momentum in the match, as the well drilled Bees stubbornly snuffed out any remaining threat.
Martin came closest to an equaliser late on as he met a Matt Ritchie cross eight yards from goal, but he couldn’t keep his header down and could only watch as it drifted harmlessly over the bar.
The final whistle sounded moments later to seal another home defeat for Town, who make the trip to Meadow Lane to face Notts County this weekend.
