Scott Lindsey was disappointed that defensive lapses cost his team against Northampton

Scott Lindsey felt that defensive lapses meant his team contrived to lose a game that they did not deserve to. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the Swindon Town head coach after the 2-1 defeat.

Jonny Williams gave Swindon the lead midway through the second half, but goals from Ben Fox and then Mitch Pinnock three minutes from time meant Swindon came away with no points.

Lindsey felt that Swindon were not at their best against Northampton, but still deserved more than they got.

He said: “When you look at the game I don’t think we should have lost that game, but I also don’t think we did enough to win the game.

“There were one or two moments that we have to defend better, but overall we went toe to toe against a top side.

“We didn’t defend the far post for the winner, and I don’t know how many more sessions we can do to stop that as we are constantly working on defending those moments and we did not do it well enough again.

“We were playing against the team who are second in the league today and even when we were not at our best, I felt that we were still the best team on the pitch.

“But you can’t defend in moments like that and expect to win games of football.

“I still think there was chances in there you know, you saw the header at the end by Ciaran Brennan, you saw Johnny Williams where the ball was pulled back to him and he never really connected properly. So there was moments where we should have scored.

“When you play against the side of Northampton's quality, you're probably only going to get three or four moments where you can score and I felt that when we had those we weren't aggressive enough.”

Lindsey was also disappointed that having identified set pieces as Northampton’s strength and worked on them all week, they struggled to contain them.

He said: “We know our line was too deep for the equaliser. If you watch it back our lines miles too deep.

“We didn't get that right and if our line is higher then we defend it and we probably get first contact on the ball.

“I didn't think we defend set pieces well today, I thought that there was a couple of scary moments where they got the first contact which we've been good at this season.

“But like we said in the week that they've scored a lot goals offset pieces, they're very good at it was one area that we really needed to concentrate on today and we didn’t deal with it in that moment so it is very, very disappointing.”
