Scott Lindsey was delighted his side got a result after a period of soul searching

Scott Lindsey was pleased that his side’s soul searching following recent frustrating results bore fruit as they snatched a late win against Sutton. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke with the Swindon manager after the victory.

Swindon seemed destined to record yet another draw as goals from Jonny Williams and Tyrese Shade in the first-half were cancelled out by a fine double from Will Randall, but Jacob Wakeling secured all three points in the dying seconds.

Lindsey revealed that he and his players have had many discussions in recent weeks after failing to get the results they felt they deserved and was so pleased they managed to get a positive result.

He said: “That win gives us more of a lift than you will ever believe, we feel that we are playing well at the moment and we are seven unbeaten.

“I am really pleased with the players, they have put a real shift in since the last game in training and we have been doing a lot of soul searching, analysis, and talking about it on the training ground.

“I think we certainly deserved the win tonight, certainly at Stockport and again at Gillingham I felt we missed opportunities and dropped points.

“We are really positive and my glass is half full as we are now seven unbeaten and I think we have to take that as a real positive.

“I know there are a lot of draws in there and we could have turned two or three of them into wins.

“I understand the frustration and the players and I are frustrated, but we are really pleased with the start in many way, because you know straight away that is going to be a slow burn because we have a lot of young players and I am really pleased with the progress so far.”

The decision to replace Luke Jephcott during the second half was met with some boos from home fans and Lindsey wants the fans to get behind the team.

He said: “The idea was to bring Jephcott off after 70 minutes because he has not played since pre-season, so that was always going to be the case.

“But I felt I had to make the change sooner because the game had gone flat at that moment and I just wanted a bit of a spark, and Jacob [Wakeling] certainly gave us that.

“A lot of people probably thought ‘what are you bringing him off for?’ and I understand that but also the player has not played for a long time and I didn’t want to overcook him and all of a sudden we have a strain.

“I just want people to stick with us because we are working incredibly hard and I understand people coming for me, but we do think about the changes we made.”
