PREVIEW: Swindon Town v Stevenage

SWINDON TOWN will aim to make it back-to-back league wins for the first time this season later tonight as they welcome Stevenage to The County Ground. TotalSport Swindon’s Ryan Walker previews the action.

Having secured the first win of his Swindon managerial campaign with a nervy one-nil away victory over Port Vale at the weekend, Richie Wellens will be hoping to continue the weekend’s form tonight against a Stevenage side pushing for the playoffs.

Recording both home and away league victories over the Hertfordshire side last season, Town will be hoping that they can add to their impressive form of having lost only three games against tonight’s visitors since 1998.

However, contrasting league results make Dino Maamria’s Stevenage side a formidable opposition that has lost just six games all season.

An impressive 3-2 victory over MK Dons in their last game saw the team rise to eighth in the League table on 31 points, sitting outside the playoff spots on goal difference alone.

And having only failed to score in just seven league matches this season, Stevenage’s attackers will provide Swindon’s defence with a stern test as the Robins seek to climb higher up the table.

Ben Kennedy will provide the away side’s biggest threat with his goal at the weekend extending his season tally to four goals this campaign.

But whilst a strong attack will undoubtedly provide goals, Stevenage will be wary of conceding away from home having lost 4-0 against Bury in their latest away fixture.

An early Swindon goal would certainly help settle the nerves as Wellens looks to kick-start some positivity into an underperforming Town side.

But a lack of goals at The County Ground in recent games combined with Swindon being without their two main strikers, Adebayo and Richards, due to injury, makes for glum reading.

Richie Wellens has demanded his players play high tempo football with the ability to get the ball down quickly and use the team’s pace up top to cause problems. And in the absence of a traditional number nine for tonight’s match, young Scott Twine looks set to start through the middle.

Injury concerns for Swindon see Jak McCourt join the names mentioned above, whilst James Dunne remains unavailable due to personal reasons.

No drawn results in the history of the fixture guarantees goals for tonight’s league encounter, but fans of the Wiltshire club can only hope that Town replicates the same form this evening as they shown on Saturday.
