PREVIEW: Swindon Town v Carlisle United

A new era begins at Swindon Town today as Richie Wellens takes to the dugout for the first time as STFC’s new manager against Carlisle United. TotalSport Swindon’s Ryan Walker previews the match ahead of kick-off.

Nearly a week has passed since Phil Brown was axed from the managerial hot seat at SN1 as former Oldham manager Richie Wellens was chosen to fill the void.

But today’s League Two fixture against 11th placed Carlisle represents a big opportunity for the unexpected appointment to get off to a winning start.

Last meeting one another in the League last season saw Swindon go unbeaten against today’s opposition, winning away at Brunton Park before entertaining a goalless draw towards the closing stages of the season at The County Ground.

However, a change in circumstances sees Town come into today's match seeking a much-needed three points with Swindon currently positioned six positions and two points behind Carlisle in 17th position of the League Two table.

Having only recorded one win from their last five league games, the Cumbrian’s head into today’s encounter low on confidence. But in similarly poor form, Swindon have managed just one win from their last eight league games.

Wellens kicked off his management stint at Oldham Athletic with a five-match unbeaten run, and the 38-year-old will be looking to replicate that winning start at his new club.

Extra spice will be added to today’s game as prodigy goes up against master in the technical area.

Wellens was brought into Oldham as the first-team coach under the stewardship of John Sheridan, only for the latter to replace him when Sheridan was sacked from his position.

Carlisle comes to Wiltshire looking to cause an upset in Wellens’ first game in charge with Ashley Nadesan leading the charge for the visitors having scored six goals already this season.

Today’s match will be one of mixed emotions for Swindon Town fans hoping for a successful turnaround of their season but frustrated with the fifth managerial change in three seasons.

Wellens has stated his intent to make a success as manager of the Robins, now his side must do their talking on the pitch.
