PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Swindon Town v Crawley Town

Good morning and welcome to a special Swindon Town transfer deadline day press conference as we speak to Head Coach Ben Garner from 10.30am to preview tomorrow's visit of Crawley Town in League Two and discuss transfer activity. Join Total Sport Swindon's Ryan Walker from 10.30am as he brings you live updates from today's press conference.

10:59AM

That concludes today's press conference. Thank you for joining us.

10:58AM

Garner on second half of the season:

"I think it will go down to the wire. I think it will be very close and there are a lot teams right in the mix. There are still teams that can come out of the pack and you look at what Mansfield have done with their run so things can change very quickly.

?We have to focus on ourselves and get that mentality where we want to win against Crawley on Tuesday night, if we do that 'bang' we move onto the next game. That's how you get momentum into your season, if you try to pick 4/5/6 games down the line or the run-in then you come unstuck."

10:47AM

Garner on Swindon's lack of ruthlessness:

"I think Saturday was more execution as we got into the positions and didn't take our opportunities. We didn't make the right decisions and that can happen. It's just a case of working on that. We managed the game comfortably and we can certainly improve on going forward and getting another goal. We have to make sure the performances are getting the points they deserve if we want to challenge at the top of the table."

10:45AM

Garner on Anthony Grant departure:

"I think it was a disrupted start to the season with the International break and the covid isolation which meant it was a lot of time without football and he never got the opportunity to get back in. We wanted to push the team forward and we both decided it was best for him to move on."

10:43AM

Garner on departures:

"The only outgoings will be if we want to get anyone out on loan. That will depend on the closing stages of this window now."

10:42AM

Garner on Simpson and Kesler-Hayden:

"Tyreece won't be coming back to us I don't think. We moved on to get Louie in and I wish Tyreece the best whether he stays at Ipswich or moves on. Kaine Kesler-Hayden won't be coming back to us. We had that confirmed yesterday. It's slightly disappointing but things change in football. I spoke with Kaine last night and wished him all the best."

10:40AM

Garner on Barry:

"He fits in very well, he is a huge talent and gives us lots of competition. His record at youth level with England is outstanding and for a young lad he has a lot of experience with Barcelona, then at Villa, and a loan move to Ipswich. The easy option would have been for him to stay at Aston Villa but he wanted to get out to play and prove himself. He fits well inthis group and is one of those players who could light up the second half of the season."

10:38AM

Garner on new signings:

"Louie Barry and Brandon Cooper both come into the team today and will be in the squad tomorrow. We had our targets and have got every one of them so far. We are working on one more player today and if we can get that player in then I will be delighted. Brandon had lots of offers from several League One clubs but we made our case and he wanted to come and play here. He was our top target and we didn't waiver from that."

10:37AM

Garner on injuries:

"Both are progressing well and Mathieu is back into team training. Jack Payne should be back in team training this Thursday and fitness-wise he is fantastic. It is just making sure that knee is fully healed. We have one player who we are assessing this morning but other than that everyone is good. We have some new additions coming in today."

10:36AM

Garner on support from fans:

"I think the fans have been good especially in recent weeks and the atmosphere has been good especially in the Bristol Rovers game. I think with the way we play there can be times where patience is required, and I've had one person tell me we need to get it forward and into the box but that isn't the way we play. There is only one team in the league that has had more shots than us but we need to be more ruthless."

10:34AM

Garner on packed schedule:

"We want to make sure performances are good and need to use the squad to rotate players. We still need to make sure we are coaching and developing players that aren't getting as much playing time. We've got a run of home games, our home form has improved but we need to turn draws into wins and try to improve that form even further."

10:33AM

Garner on Crawley:

"I think Crawley have done well away from home and their manager has done a fantastic job there with no academy and being a team with one of the smaller budgets. They have a lot of quality in their team and can be a match for anyone in this division. We have to prepare very well and be at our best to win."

10:32AM

Garner on Colchester draw:

"Hugely frustrating and frustrating in the way we dominated the game and came away with 1 point. 90% of what we done was very good but 10% was finishing those chances and not switching off at the end. We created numerous opportunities and dominated possession. It's just a shame we didn't get the 3 points what we deserved."

10:30AM

Ben Garner has now joined us.

10:30AM

We are in the zoom call and will be joined by Ben Garner shortly. Swindon drew 1-1 with Colchester United on Saturday and go into tomorrow's game looking to bounce back from that disappointing result that saw Colchester finish the game with 9 men.
