PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Walsall v Swindon

Live updates as Gavin Gunning speaks to the press ahead of Swindon Town travelling to Walsall in League Two. Total Sport's Joe Acklam reports live from the press conference.

3:54PM

That is all from today, as Gunning said, hopefully the score is the same as May.

3:53PM

I asked Wakeling about staying confident and playing as a winger:

  • I am always watching clips and looking to improve, and seeing stats where for young players I am still doing well does help
  • I think I showed flashes on Saturday of what I can do in that position and also I am allowed the freedom to do what I can do.
3:50PM

Jacob Wakeling on patience:

It is getting the balance, I am eager to improve. That is why I am here, as well as getting promotion. It is not going to happen over night. With Austin, Gladwin and others it will help. I am grateful to play. Last season I played four games in six months and this season I have played about 27 games. I know there will be frustration that I am not scoring or assisting, but I am not the finished article yet.

I think this is the perfect place for me. This club shouldn't be in League Two and getting promotion is everyone's aim.

3:48PM

Jacob Wakeling on Cain:

His left foot has stood out. I have played against him a few times and he has always stood out. Hopefully he delivers a few balls for me.

3:48PM

Jacob Wakeling on new managers:

I have never heard anyone talk about it. We just have to get on with it, it just happens at clubs. We as players have to trust Gav and Mildy to deliver the sessions and get on with things. We are good enough group and have great experience to help us through it. I think this is my second time having a manager go, but you just need to work hard.

3:46PM

Jacob Wakeling on Walsall:

I think we are in a good position now. We aren't a completely different team to last time, but we are confident after winning 5-0. They will be looking at us as a threat.

3:46PM

Jacob Wakeling on RHM:

Delighted for him, he has been through a hell of a lot and I am hoping he can kick on and stay fit. He was unlucky not to score, but I am sure the next one will go in.

3:45PM

Jacob Wakeling on Austin:

He has been excellent, it is not every day in League Two you get to play with someone like that. The standards in training, I want to have a career like him.

His communication is excellent on the pitch, his talking is so good and helps me a lot, it is the same in training. He is really helping me.

3:44PM

Jacob Wakeling on style:

The way they want me to play, they want me to be inside and close to the other forwards. Telling me to show how good I am. I felt more free. Not exactly go anywhere, I had to defend and do the basics, but there is a lot more to come from me and get as many goals as I can. On the weekend I didn't do that, but I impacted the game.

3:43PM

Jacob Wakeling on Grimsby:

As a team we showed what we can go. Gunning Mildy and everyone has been great with us and told us to go and express ourselves. I know they had a man sent off, but we were outstanding.

3:42PM

Jacob Wakeling on playing at Walsall:

I have had a lot of people asking me for tickets. It will be nice to play in front of friends and family. I can't wait. I have lost count of the amount that have asked me.

3:41PM

I asked about Johnson and if there was any uncertainty about having no permanent manager:

  • He was key and they will miss him, but Flynn has been backed to get Matt in
  • Channeled his inner Roy Keane and said "do your job".
3:37PM

Gavin Gunning on drawing on last May:

I wasn't here, so I don't know. A lot of the players will have good memories, but that team is gone. It is a different way of playing, hopefully the result is the same.

3:36PM

Gavin Gunning on his second game:

We have put so much into the first game, we had a real structure and nullified their strengths. Walsall are a big physical team and score from set pieces. Matt is different to Johnson, but will be a big threat.

3:34PM

Gavin Gunning on reserve leagues:

With them clubs that have a 23s, they are not worried about the wages, but at our level it is more difficult. It is tough for kids leaving big clubs on big wages coming down here, it is a reality check.

3:33PM

Gavin Gunning on Cain:

Fantastically technically and will improve the group massively. He needs game time, but it shows how good the recruitment is to get a player of that calibre.

It takes time to adapt, Clayton was shaky when he first started playing and with work in the structure he has developed and looks more like a man now. He will be a future captain of the club.

The physicality of the league is tough, u23s is a false league, this is a different kettle of fish.

3:32PM

Gavin Gunning on Reed:

Reed was probably the best midfielder in the league last season, but he just needed a fresh start. Fantastic guy, great around the group and hopefully he does well at Mansfield except against us.

3:31PM

Gavin Gunning on transfers:

I haven't a clue about FBT, hopefully it is here and he seems really keen to stay here. For the group, as a bloke, and on the pitch.

(essentially, nobody tells me nothing). We have a fantastic squad and we have utilise it.

3:30PM

Gavin Gunning on Walsall:

Fresh game. We will not take anything from the last game, we have watched it for clips but we didn't play well at all. Hopefully we can get the fans off their seats as we were too slow. We want to be solid behind the ball and attack quickly and get overloads. When they think they are in control and you can strike quickly, that is a good place to be. We are away, so the game plan will be different, but hopefully a winning one.

3:28PM

Gavin Gunning on injuries:

Tom Clayton is the only one out, Gladwin possibly. Devine has been on the astro the last couple days, his time here has been stop start, but he has the attributes to be a top player. Iandolo will be in the squad.

3:28PM

Gavin Gunning on post Grimsby:

It has been great, the place has been buzzing. We were at a bit of a low and now it feels great and hopefully we take this into the weekend. You have young guys and senior guys and seniors, the leaders are leading by example and everyone is taking things on board. We haven't given anyone anything extra, but they have been great around the group.

3:26PM

Gavin Gunning on being in limbo:

It doesn't matter to me. I am trying to give the team a structure and have a plan in place for the weekend, then we will see. Whatever will be, will be. But my thought process is on Walsall.

In life you never know what is going to come around, I can't say no or yes [on taking the job.]

3:25PM

Gavin Gunning on how he is faring:

I am confident in my ability to deliver a message to a team or personell. It has been good. It is not just me, it is a team effort. It is not the Gavin Gunning Show and it has gone across well so far.

3:24PM

Gavin Gunning has arrived

3:22PM

Progress has been made, we have moved from the foyer to the press room. Here we go confirmed?

3:03PM

Good afternoon everyone. The trains have held up so I am at the County Ground ready to speak to Gavin Gunning. It is running behind a bit, so maybe do something else and check back later.
