PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Swindon v Tranmere Rovers

Live updates as Scott Lindsey speaks to the press ahead of Swindon Town hosting Tranmere Rovers in League Two. Total Sport's Joe Acklam reports live from the press conference.

4:23PM

That is all from a very extended press conference.

4:20PM

Jonny Williams on being Welsh:

Ever since Wales selected me as a youngster I have always felt Welsh even though I was born in England. My dad is Welsh, and I have played for them for half of my life. England did try and speak to me before my first call-up, but I already wanted to play for Wales.

I do feel the love from Swindon fans and the two. There was a period in my career where I didn't know what I wanted to do and I looked abroad. Then Garner came and I had that strong connection with him and he wasn;t wrong about this place. I feel proud to represent Swindon.

4:17PM

Jonny Williams on the pressure of a World Cup:

The Euros is obviously massive, but the World Cup is the pinnacle and no one has played in it. But we have players with that top level experience so we just treat it like the Euros and do what we can. In terms of conditions it will be different, but we have to treat it the same as before.

4:16PM

Jonny Williams on Qatar:

I have already asked to take some suncream from the physio room. I have never been and it will be a different place to play in tough conditions. We have to adapt quickly and everyone has those problems.

He would rather not comment on the human rights aspect.

4:14PM

Jonny Williams on the group:

Fortunately I have only experienced getting out of the group because we did it both times. It is a tough group, always tougher against teams you aren't used to playing and then England will be like an English league game. We have full belief that we can progress and we take confidence from taking top nations to the wire in the Nations League. We believe we can do it.

4:12PM

Jonny Williams does know the other three Swindon players to have gone to a World Cup. Well prepared by Dave Wrixton.

4:12PM

Jonny Williams on playing against Tranmere:

I have trained all week and ready to play. We find out tomorrow, so I have to wait and see. I am relaxed about it as I have had one eye on it for a month and it might have been the best month of my career, getting nominated for player of the month and scoring goals.

4:11PM

Jonny Williams on his form:

I always said to myself when we qualified, I will have full focus on Swindon and take each day as it comes even though it was always being mentioned to me. I wanted to score goals, play well and give myself the best chance to go.

4:10PM

Jonny Williams on his expectations on arrival:

I think the care is well above league 2 standard. The sport science and conditioning are way above the level, they are keen to not have any regrets and it helps. It is the hardest I have worked on strength work in my career, for a footballer we train late, elsewhere you go home at 1 but here we work hard and make sure we are prepared for games.

4:09PM

Jonny Williams on Swindon's role:

It has been massive, over the last year and a half I have played the most games I have every played and everyone here have been phenomenal to make me robust enough to play in all these games. The faith Lindsey has showed me and played me in every game and given me that confidence to do my best.

4:08PM

Jonny Williams on playing in League 2:

Thankfully the gaffer has always believed in me, I have played numerous crucial qualifiers despite playing in League Two, He has continued to pick me and I am very grateful for that. I try to repay that faith.

4:07PM

Jonny Williams on his role in the squad:

Every announcement is a massive honour, there was a period in 2017 when I dropped down under Giggs were I wasn't making it and I thought it was over for me. Going to another major tournament is crazy and it is funny how quickly things change. I try and enjoy it all, be myself and perform as best I can whenever I am on the pitch.

4:05PM

Jonny Williams on World Cup memories:

I don't remember too much. I remember watching Messi lose, but I wasn;t a kid.

4:05PM

Jonny Williams on his selection:

Very surreal. Emotional, I went back home to watch it my mum , dad, and girlfriend. Seeing that on the screen, I think about my journey. Unbelievable.

4:03PM

Jonny Williams is with us

3:43PM

Williams is currently doing a different interview, so perhaps check back in a bit

3:37PM

I asked Lindsey about if he needed to reaffirm standards after Stockport and if he believes in life after Williams:

  • Believes in what we are doing and moved on quickly
  • I think we do have players who can play there, but that system is not something that we can play all the time because of the lack of width
3:29PM

Scott Lindsey on injured players coming back:

I think RHM is behind the other two. MacDonald has moved forward and will be available sooner than we thought and maybe Clayton too.

These next two weeks are very important. Our next game is most important and we want to get back on the horse as quickly as possible. We are hopeful and the atmosphere is very good even after a bad result.

3:27PM

Scott Lindsey on the importance of the game:

One thing we said was we know where we are, we know what to do and how many games we have left with no cups to play in. We will set up to win all 29 games, will we win them all? Probably not, but we will set out to do it and what we achieved last season, we had 22 wins. So 14 more will get us to that. We will need more than that for top 3 and maybe even play-offs. Is that doable? For sure, we are in a good place.

3:25PM

Scott Lindsey on being back at home:

We are in a good position and have had a good start to the season, if you take the cup games away, the league has been very encouraging. I am pleased to be at home after some tough away trips.

3:24PM

Scott Lindsey on Tranmere:

They have not won since mid-October, the last game they played 352 in the first half and then changed to 442 after half-time and played better. It is tough to know what they will do and we will plan for both.

They have good players and a very experienced manager (Lindsey bingo) he is a good manager who I like a lot.

3:23PM

Scott Lindsey on Gladwin's absence in that game:

Somebody said to me that some of your best games are when you don't play and we clearly missed him. He will benefit from the rest and that was the right thing to do. I felt we missed FBT and Clayton as well, but Gladwin has been one of our better players and it just shows his importance.

3:22PM

Scott Lindsey on Stockport:

I think first of all I try and understand the game, watch it back and see what happened. Then debrief with the players and see why we are so poor, then draw a line under it and hope we don't see a performance like it again. I thought Stockport were very good, they locked in and didn't show us space to play out, but we got certain things wrong which we spoke about and once we get things wrong it is hard to play our way, if one cog is out then the rest becomes very difficult. They were poor goals and schoolboy defending.

The players don't mean to play that badly, they are honest people, it was just one of them things.

3:20PM

Scott Lindsey on Williams:

We have to adapt and I am really pleased about him going, he deserves it. It is a brilliant achievement for him and the club. He has been arguably our best player, so that will be interesting to see what we have to do. I think I have always said about the medical staff and strength and conditioning staff, they are really good at their jobs and keep the players tip top. He has enjoyed playing this season and let him roam and be an attacking threat.

We will have to assess what we do with him this Saturday.

3:18PM

Scott Lindsey on injuries:

A new one in Brann, he did it after the game when the players who didn't play did work. He slipped awkwardly and had real pain in his knee and after a scan its dislocated and maybe some ligament damage, so that is 8-10 weeks. We are working very hard to get a new back-up in for Saturday, it is a difficult situation and not a lot of quality, but we have until 12 tomorrow. If it comes to it then we will probably put a keeper in from the youth team, but we will have to wait and see.

No more concerns, nothing else major aside from MacDonald, RHM, and Tom Clayton.

Good to have FBT back and I think we missed him in the games he didn't play. He is a centre half option, I think we have all seen his commitment and he is strong in the air. We are not at the stage where we feel we have to bring Minturn back as playing on loan is important for him.

3:13PM

Lindsey has been found!

3:09PM

It sounds like we will have the pleasure of speaking to Jonny Williams later on, presumably his 1400th interview of the day, but Lindsey has gone AWOL.

2:55PM

Good afternoon everyone, we are in position to speak to Scott Lindsey ahead of Swindon returning to league action against Tranmere this weekend.
