PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Newport County v Swindon

Follow along with live updates as Jody Morris speaks to the press ahead of Swindon Town's clash with Newport County. Total Sports' Joe Acklam reports live from the press conference.

2:28PM

That is all for today, roll on Newport.

2:28PM

I asked Tomlinson about coming back to a team where many players have changed:

  • It was a bit strange coming back and knowing staff but many players being different. But I like the boys so far and I am happy to grow those bonds.
2:24PM

Joe Tomlinson on being a Swindon lad:

It makes it harder being injured as I want to be out there, but I have to get through this to get to the good part. Everything aligned to come back and I am very happy.

2:23PM

Joe Tomlinson on his goals:

Promotion is number one. It has been tough part of the season, so I want to enjoy playing again.

2:23PM

Joe Tomlinson on finding a home:

I want to settle somewhere and feel like I belong. Moving around is tough and I want to stay somewhere and move forwards with the club.

2:22PM

Joe Tomlinson on his play:

Playing for Wroughton growing up I was more of a forward and then Southampton moved me back. I like the feeling of scoring goals as much as stopping them. I like affecting the play going forward, but clean sheets also feel good.

2:21PM

Joe Tomlinson on expression:

I need to have a chat with the gaffer about it, but I like to score goals and stop them. Clean sheets are massive but I like to get forward.

2:21PM

Joe Tomlinson on Morris:

I have been doing my stuff next to the session, he has worked with fantastic players and I like what I have seen. High pressing is brilliant for me as that is what I like.

2:20PM

Joe Tomlinson on his season:

It has been tough so far. I was full of confidence coming into the season but there were some promises that didn't happen. I am injured and it is tough not to be out there, but it should be soon.

2:19PM

Joe Tomlinson on the deal:

View to buy in the summer and hopefully that will happen.

2:19PM

Joe Tomlinson on last season:

I really enjoyed my time here last year, I feel like I have unfinished business and I wanted to get promotion. Then we have a fantastic manager and I want to learn off him. Plus playing in home town is special.

2:18PM

Joe Tomlinson on returning:

I was very late in the day. I was thinking nothing was going to happen and then I got the call around 4 and immediately I saw I wanted to go here if the deal could be done. Luckily we got it done in time. It was very nerve wracking. Hearing the interest I knew I wanted to come here and if it didn't happen that would have been tough.

2:11PM

Joe Tomlinson is the man.

2:11PM

We are still here by the way, waiting on a player.

2:05PM

I think Morris may rival Di Canio in the length of his press conferences. Very interesting stuff and you can tell he means it. But my arms are hurting after typing it all out.

2:01PM

I asked Morris about the players fitness levels and if his Derby and Chelsea teams were a representation of what he wanted to do with Swindon:

  • It it not ideal coming in mid-season and trying to get this done, but we have to try. You don't know exactly where players are, but we are going to be asking more of them
  • At Derby and first season at Chelsea this is what we were trying to do, we were one of the better sides in both seasons for pressing
1:52PM

1:52PM

Jody Morris on a clean slate:

It is a difficult balance because you can't discount what has happened previously and you haven't watched loads of footage. At the same time you need to realise it is a new manager and regime and an opportunity for people to impress. It is finely balanced as you never know what was being asked of players. I am a big believer in what I see with me eyes compared to what I am told and stats. You need to take it into account as it will form things going forward, but we want to get somewhere where you erase what you have seen.

1:50PM

Jody Morris on being nasty:

If there is a tackle to be won or distance to be covered then we will do it. We are not talking about getting stupid bookings. There are good and poor bookings. I want a team that is in your face and when things get heated they stick together and show the fans they are prepared to do whatever it takes.

1:49PM

Jody Morris on discipline:

I believe that every time players stay disciplined. You don't want people running around for no reason, it needs a purpose. I want to be nasty to play against and be competitive. When you are away it can be more difficult to take control, although I do want to. It is an opportunity for me to see if we are ready to do that. On Saturday Gillingham looked to drop off and that made it easier to keep the ball. If we need to take control by winning the battle first, then we will.

1:47PM

Jody Morris on Newport:

Most of the messages all week are about us. It look like a 352 and they are ready to compete and get after the ball. Even more so when teams try and do that you need options to get out. We know what it will be like, but the focus is more on us.

1:46PM

Jody Morris on work:

That is one of the things that is going to key. We need to be careful how we measure it as we aren't going to get where I want to be straight away as you put people at risk. I want to see the intention, whether they are fit enough yet is something we will have to find out, but I would like to see that. I want to seen intensity and people trying to make themselves available, even when we are in possession. People shouldn't be standing still for too long. The more options we have on the ball, the easier it is to keep it and do everything else. That requires not everyone coming towards the ball and making simple passes, but a fluid team on the move. This will take time. We also have to wait and see how the opposition are, as we might get joy from things that you want to repeat.

1:44PM

Jody Morris on what he can do in a week:

That is the point, you want to see they are looking to do the right things and knowing there are plenty more messages to come. I would like to see certain things we have talked about, but it is more about what is coming. It is never ideal to have three or four days, but you still expect to see some reflection.

1:42PM

Jody Morris on the squad:

I said to them today I have been really pleased with their application. It is not easy with a new manager, but they have applied themselves really well. I can't fault them.

1:42PM

Jody Morris on injuries:

We are probably struggling a bit on Lavinier, we are not sure whether he will make it. Maybe Shade, those two we are waiting on, everyone else is ok.

I need to have a proper check-up with the medical side on Clayton, it might be a step too far so we need to clarify. I need to finalise that one. With the amount of work we have done he might be a little more vulnerable.

1:40PM

Jody Morris on his influences:

Glenn Hoddle was definitely one, he was years ahead of his time. It is 25 years later, but he wanted to pass out from the back and he just changed the whole outlook. He arrived at Chelsea when I was 14 and changed the whole club. I had a really good relationship with him and he gave me my debut. He was really good at improving players, sometimes you get great players and they struggle, but he could dilute his messages for who he was talking to. He would spend time with defenders and everyone to make those improvement.

Vialli was massive, my favourite manager. Hated to get beat so defending from the front was huge. The way he transitioned from being a player to a head coach was seamless because of his intelligence. It was 18 months ago I was having hour long zoom calls with him about leadership.

Derek McInness had an influence on me as I was close to him and I got a real close view of what was going on behind the scenes, he involved me with those decisions.

Since I have finished there are multiple, you can learn from everybody, some showed me how not to manage, so you are always trying evolve.

12:46PM

Another day, another press conference. From Sky yesterday to talking about Newport today, Jody Morris will be back with us shortly.
