ON-THE-WHISTLE MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town 1-0 Wycombe Wanderers

Harry Smith marked his return to the Swindon Town line-up by scoring the winner against Wycombe Wanderers.

Smith, who signed a season-long loan deal with Swindon in the summer, returned to parent club Millwall for a week and was a surprise name in the Town starting line-up.

He quickly justified the selection though when the towering forward hit a side-foot volley in off the post for 1-0 following a superb cross by left-back, Matt Taylor.

Like many other home Swindon matches the first half did not see a great deal of action, however Town did have a chance just before the goal.

Taylor swung in a free-kick and it was met by midfielder Amine Linganzi, who headed down into the ground and the ball was pushed out for a corner by Wycombe keeper, Scott Brown.

Linganzi threated again shortly after the goal, but he could only side-foot a left-sided Donal McDermott wide following dogged work by Keshi Anderson.

Wycombe had a few half chances of their own, however all they could fashion was a tame Adebayo Akinfenwa that was easily saved by Reice Charles-Cook and two wayward half-volleys from Marcus Bean.

Swindon went back down the other end and should have really made it 2-0, but Smith headed a point-blank header straight at Brown after Anderson's right-sided cross was deflected onto the head of the Millwall loanee.

Anderson had a go himself too, but all his long shot achieved was bringing a decent stop from Brown.

The rest of the half was all Wycombe, but again nothing clear-cut. Akinfenwa hit a turn-and-shot wide, and Nick Freeman nodded past the post after Sam Launders lashed wide. Charles-Cook was not troubled by any of those efforts either.

Unfortunately, the second half was not much better either.

It started with Charles-Cook making his first proper save of the afternoon, as he had to push an Akinfenwa half-volley away from goal.

Smith had another chance for Swindon when he shrugged off a Wycombe defender, but he rushed his shot and fired a fair bit wide from just inside the box.

Dan Scarr also volleyed well over the bar from the edge of the box with 20 minutes to go.

What best summed up the second period of so-called action was Wycombe keeper Brown registering a shot on target when his long, pumped free-kick bounced and had to be pushed over the bar by Charles-Cook.

Substitute Paul Mullin had the most exciting chance throughout the whole of the second half in stoppage time when he stung the palms of Brown with a powerful effort from the edge of the box.

An agonising five minutes of added-on time was signalled at the end of the second half and Wycombe came close through Ebere Eze, but his curled effort went just over.
