Website 0330 002 1993Full-time 1-0 Swindon!
90- Sol Brynn the housery king is taking as long as he can when the ball comes to him.
90- Swindon clear it off the line! Bogle looked sure to score from a cutback, only for Hutton to hack it off the line and possibly preserve 3 points. 1-0.
90- Wakeling could have won it. Iandolo's cross found him in the middle but he stretched to head it and sent it over.
4 minutes added on.
88- OFF: Will Evans
ON: Chanka Zimba
86- Iandolo goes close. He won a long header but couldn't quite find Blake-Tracy, only for the ball to come back to him in space, he came inside a curled a shot just beyond the post. 1-0.
82- OFF: Jonny Williams
ON: Ellis Iandolo
79- Also to that counter attacking point I made earlier. As Swindon attacked there, they were left two-v-two at the back between their centre-backs and Newport's strikers and that could be a recipe for disaster. 1-0.
78- Khan on for Reed is an interesting one. With Reed not on a yellow and the other two midfielders walking the tightrope you might have thought Gladwin would be sacrificed. 1-0.
76- OFF: Louis Reed
ON: Saidou Khan
72- OFF: Luke Jephcott
ON: Tyrese Shade (this may become a theme of Swindon games).
72- OFF: Cameron Norman, Nathan Moriah-Welsh
ON: Hayden Linley, Lewis Collins
70- Penalty shout. Gladwin wins the ball on the halfway line and drives forward before sliding in Wakeling. He gets crowded out and goes down under pressure but likely no contact from the 'keeper. 1-0.
67- OFF: Aaron Wildig
ON: James Waite
65- Huge save from Brynn (according to everyone but the ref). Newport swing in a corner and win the header only for the Middlesbrough Yashin to pounce like a cat to tip it over the bar.
62- Jephcott should make it 2. Gladwin's corner is poor but comes to Williams who finds space and angles a cross to Jephcott unmarked at the back post, but his shot it blocked.
61- Lightning counter. Swindon were under pressure there but one poor corner set Williams, Darcy and Wakeling racing away and won a corner. 1-0.
60- Swindon seem to be thinking subs now as Steve Mildenhall is giving someone instructions. (I can't see who).
56- Taking the lead was what Swindon needed here as they have had no trouble keeping possession here. Gladwin plays a beautiful curling cross in that was just too long for Wakeling. 1-0.
54- Hutton did something else! This time he came inside and had a shot which whistled narrowly wide off a deflection. 1-0.
51- It was Darcy again trying his luck from range and let me tell you, Scott Twine has pictures of Darcy on his bedroom wall. Townsend parried it and Jephcott does what he was signed to do, be there and tap home.
GOAL! SWINDON 1 (Jephcott 51') Newport 0
50- The tactics have moved from Hutton cross and inshallah to Darcy shoot an inshallah and it is working. Once again he shoots from range and has it pushed behind for a corner.
49- From the resulting corner however it was played short and worked to Darcy who struck a pile-driver to be beaten away by Townsend.
48- It happened again, It happened agaaaaaaaaaaaaain. Remeao Hutton once again in acres of space but can't find a Swindon head.
45- Newport get us back underway for the second half. 0-0.
The team are back. Please stop just getting Hutton to cross.
Saturday's opponents Stevange lead Sutton 1-0 at the Lamex. he he he Lame-x.
In tonight's big EFL Trophy match, Bristol Rovers are down to ten men but are also winning 2-0. Glenn Whelan got sent off and you really have to question why he is still playing football. The Pulis glory days are over Glenn, pack it in.
Attendance is 9325 with 648 from Newport. Feels like a bald faced lie, but if Swindon want to live in a dreamworld then who am I to stop them?
I have also noticed on a few occasions about Swindon's frailty on the counter. It may be my next tactical deep dive, but the structure doesn't seem to be in place to pin teams back if Swindon concede possession and Baudry is being exposed for having maybe half a leg to run on.
Generally Swindon are controlling this game well, the passing is crisp and going to the right places and they are moving Newport about. I would like to see Lavinier introduced as he just has a bit more craft than Hutton, who is very much cross and inshallah.
Well, Swindon started quickly and were causing some problems there. I just get the feeling that Newport are happy for Hutton to cross it 100 times today and back themselves to deal with. That bet is looking like a good one at the moment.
Half-time: Swindon 0 Newport 0
45- Louis Reed was clearly listening to Lindsey about appealing for stuff. Textbook arms outstretched walk to get Adam Lewis booked.
45- A flurry of chances in the Newport box. Williams, Jephcott and Darcy all had a go, Swindon are just struggling to find anything clear cut so far. 0-0.
3 minutes of added on time.
43- Would a football team ever do a training session on clearances? Maybe Burnley, but with the amount of mishit ones from Swindon tonight, Lindsey might need to consider it. 0-0.
39- I don't think Remeao Hutton has been marked all night. The issue being that crossing is not proving to be a very fruitful route to goal. They need to have the guile to do something other than toss it into the middle with the ball on the right. 0-0.
34- Big drop from Townsend. Hutton whips in a hopeful ball which the 'keeper tried to high point only to drop it, fortunately for him his defenders reacted quickest. 0-0.
31- Gavin Gunning is currently marshaling the whole defence from the touchline. Which is probably good idea as they have been rather disorganised so far.
28- Sol Brynn does a superman dive to stop a Newport cross reaching any attackers. Under that shirt I am pretty sure he has the suit on too, he just doesn't need a phone box.
27- Optimistic of Hutton to find space and then see if Jonny Williams could outjump the 'keeper. He couldn't, obviously. 0-0.
23- Newport almost in again as a flick on deceives Blake-Tracy but also eludes Will Evans.
22- Swindon look too vulnerable on the counter attack at the moment. The attacking has been fluid and dangerous, but in transition Baudry is getting exposed.
20- End-to-end stuff. Hutton got the ball in the second phase of an attack and picked out Wakeling, who headed into the side netting. 0-0.
19- Darcy booked for not very much.
18- Should be 1-0 Newport. Baudry plays a shocking pass back to Brynn after he already had to atone for an earlier error and set Bogle clean through, but his shot was straight at Brynn.
17- Gefahrlich, Achtung! As I said Swindon needed to score whilst they were on top and Newport are coming more into the game. One Lewis crossed across the face of goal and found the other Lewis beyond the back post but he failed to make the keeper work.
16- Darcy again finding space between the lines. This time off to the left and he drove inwards but his shot was never truly troubling Townsend. 0-0.
14- With all the build-up I was half expecting Scott Twine to take that free-kick. Instead Adam Lewis skied it into the Town End sign.
13- Ben Gladwin goes into the book for a foul midway inside the Swindon half.
11- Swindon need to use this. Gladwin wanders the length of the field before scuffing a shot wide of the near post. Usually when Town don't score in periods like this the game gets away from them, so they need a goal soon. 0-0.
10- I looked down and briefly thought that Ben Garner was in the Newport dugout, but it appears to be a different Guardiola wannabe.
8- Lindsey was talking about a fast start to unsettle Newport and he is getting it. Hutton this game beats a man and delivers into the near post where Jephcott can't quite connect with the cross. Only one team in this so far, so expect the next update to be 1-0 Newport.
7- Newport look very uncomfortable. Townsend's clearance goes straight to Reed, who plays it straight forward to Darcy who finds space and drills a shot which is well saved.
5- Early bit of excitement as Wakeling feigns passing to Hutton outside him and cuts inside to take a shot which is blocked and flies to safety. 0-0.
This has looked like a strong start from Town. They are shifting the ball around quickly and Newport appear to be sitting off them.
Swindon have an early corner here after some good possession forces Newport to flick it behind. Naturally they didn't score from it.
Ben Gladwin gets us underway.
Both sets of players are now going to have a minutes silence for the victims of a stadium crush in Indonesia at the weekend.
The person driving the ball car is disappointingly low on hi-jinks and is driving it very slowly. I wanted mayhem.
Here come the players.
I believe I went with a 1-1 draw as my LSPOD prediction on the Presser last night, so let's pray that my predictive skills remain poor this evening as with Stevenage at the weekend, Town might need to win this.
The ball car has lights on it! Actual headlights, breaking lights and what not. This is a major development and somehow makes the whole thing even better.
Both teams did a group half pitch sprint to their fans before retiring to the dressing rooms. Let me tell you is the opposite of electric in here. There are ten minutes to kick-off but the crowd is looking rather sparse.
In case anyone cares and if you do have a good hard look at yourself in the closest available mirror, still 0-0 in the Rovers-Palace game.
In bad news, both early Champions League kick-offs are processions. We knew Bayern would walk Viktoria Plzen, but Adan's early red card spoiled Sporting vs Marseille. This is making the post-team sheets; pre-kick-off nether-zone very dull. As this live blog is reflecting so far. Apologies.
In Scott Lindsey's attempts to make fringe players feel involved he is 1-0 up against James Rowberry. Swindon are training as one large group, whereas the Newport sub's are doing their own thing. An early W for Swindon.
Tonight is also the massively influential EFL Trophy clash between Bristol Rovers and Crystal Palace U21s in Swindon's group. The result has absolutely nothing to do with Swindon as they are already out, but it's half-time in the Champions League and I am bored. They kicked-off 7 minutes ago and it is 0-0.
A quick burst up to the press box has revealed that Rushian Hepburn-Murphy is here going through some rehabilitation stuff. He doing some weighted stretching or other technical sports science words (picture a man pulling some weights around). So that could be good news, but I don't really know enough to be able to tell.
Based on tonight's selection, Saturday's team was definitely what Lindsey thinks his strongest team looks like. Hopefully they will repay that and show the energy that they need to perform.
The marvelous insider information I have gathered, better known as Ben Wills formerly of this parish, has let me know it is 352 and handily, both of the wing-backs are A. Lewis.
Townsend
Norman Clarke Demetriou
Lewis Willmott Moriah-Welsh Wildig Lewis
Evans Bogle
Newport County XI:
Townsend, Norman, Clarke, Willmott, Bogle, Lewis, Moriah-Welsh, Wildig, Lewis, Demetriou, Evans
Subs: Day, Drysdale, Waite, Bennett, Zimba, Lindley, Collins
So that is just the one enforced change as Baudry replaces MacDonald, but otherwise Swindon are as they were against Northampton four days ago.
Swindon Town XI:
Brynn; Hutton, Clayton, Baudry, Blake-Tracy; Gladwin, Reed, Darcy; Williams, Jephcott, Wakeling
Subs: Brann, Iandolo, Aguiar, Lavinier, Khan, Shade, Brennan
We know from Scott Lindsey yesterday that Angus MacDonald won't be involved tonight due to him dislocating his collarbone against Northampton. However, Mathieu Baudry returns from illness and Luke Jephcott and Tom Clayton are both also fit after being subbed off as a precautionary measure at the weekend.
Good evening everyone. Swindon's second game at the County Ground in four days is here as Newport County visit the County Ground. Team sheets will be out shortly.
STFC are Swindon's top football team, based at The County Ground Stadium.
