MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town (3) Sutton United (2)

Jacob Wakeling's stoppage time winner gave Swindon their second win of the season with a 3-2 win over Sutton. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam reports on the game from the County Ground.

Swindon’s first-half goals were fairly fortuitous as a goalkeeping error allowed Tyrese Shade to score his first Town goal and Jonny Williams finished following a series of deflections, but those goals were cancelled out by a brace from former-Swindon youngster Will Randall.

Sutton were the better team in the second half, where there were chances at both ends, but Wakeling was there to nod in the winner in stoppage time.

The late heroics meant that Swindon sit 11th in League Two, leapfrogging tonight's visitors in the process.

Scott Lindsey opted to make two changes from the side which lined up against Gillingham ten days ago, with Luke Jephcott coming in for his first start in place of Jacob Wakeling and Ronan Darcy replaced Saidou Khan in midfield.

After just one minute Jephcott should have matched his first start with his first goal as Ben Gladwin played a delightful ball out to Williams on the counter, the Welshman delivered it on a plate for the Plymouth-loanee, but Jack Rose denied him.

Before Town had time to come to terms with what Jephcott had passed up, they were behind. A Sutton pull back found an unmarked Randall at the top of the box and he diverted the ball low into the corner to give the away side the lead.

It could have been two just minutes later when Randall again showed his quality and delivered a cross to Harry Beautyman to head on target at the back post, only to be denied by a fabulous Sol Brynn save.

After a flurry of early opportunities for the Us, Louis Reed lined up a speculative free-kick from 30 yards out and picked out the top corner, only to see Rose parrying the ball behind.

On the half hour mark there was a long delay as Angus MacDonald was on the floor following an off-the-ball incident, following a lengthy consultation with his linesman the referee chose to book Omar Bugiel.

Swindon then got back on terms with a huge slice of fortune after a quick passing move from Darcy, Williams, and Gladwin got the ball to Tyrese Shade who whipped it first time at goal and Rose misjudged the flight and allowed it between his legs to level the score.

Three minutes after that Town were in front. Reed crossed from the left and Gladwin flicked the ball back into the middle and courtesy of a few deflections Williams was able to finish into the top corner and give the hosts a sudden lead.

Swindon could not be joyous for long as after 42 minutes Will Randall bagged his brace after scoring a true screamer from 25 yards into the top corner, leaving Brynn with no chance.

Sutton started the second-half much the better, but Swindon still carried some danger and nearly scored when Marcel Lavinier got round the back and almost found substitute Saidou Khan but he was denied an instant impact by strong recovery defending from Sutton.

Into the six added minutes Swindon were finishing the stronger and Frazer Blake-Tracy found space on the left to deliver a cross and Wakeling stole a march to nod it home and give Town a much needed win.
