MATCH REPORT: Swindon (1) Colchester United (0)

Tyrese Shade came off the bench to tap home Swindon’s only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Colchester. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam reports from the County Ground.

Swindon dominated the ball but struggled to find clear opportunities in a first-half with limited action, Luke Jephcott had two blocked shots in quick succession being the main drama.

Shade was then introduced and got on the end of a Jonny Williams cross to get Swindon their first win against Colchester since 2019.

Three points moves them up to eight in the table and just one point behind Salford City in the last play-off place.

Scott Lindsey decided to keep faith with the same line-up which started against Stevenage seven days earlier despite defeat at the Lamex Stadium, meaning Saidou Khan kept his place at the base of midfield ahead of Louis Reed.

Swindon had the ball in the Colchester net after eight minutes when Ben Gladwin picked out Frazer Blake-Tracy from a corner and he powered in a header only to be denied by a foul in front of him.

Jephcott had a pair of chances to get the opener as a quick move down the left let Blake-Tracy slide him in and his shot was blocked, but Colchester didn’t fully clear and the on-loan striker was quickly in again courtesy of Williams, only for Sam Hornby to get out to him quickly and block it behind.

Swindon dominated the first half but despite finding spaces couldn’t quite fashion a clear chance, after 34 minutes Gladwin strode forward and stroked the ball out to Remeao Hutton, he got beyond his defender but his low cross was hurriedly put behind for a corner.

Colchester produced their first piece of danger late in the first period, but it was self-inflicted as Khan decided to leave a pass back to him for Tom Clayton, but Freddie Sears nipped in behind the midfielder and the ball had to be scrambled away from him.

Town could have had a penalty early in the second half as Hutton played the ball across goal and as Jephcott looked to run towards it he was pulled back from behind, but the referee saw nothing doing.

On the hour mark Jephcott was agonisingly close to getting on the end of a delicious Hutton cross across the face of goal but he was just too far away to divert it into the back of the net.

After 64 minutes came the breakthrough as Williams was allowed far too much space down the right to play the ball low across the goalmouth to Shade at the far post and it deflected off the outside of his boot and just beyond Hornby and Junior Tchamadeu and rolled slowly across the line.

Ellis Iandolo came off the bench and could have put the game beyond Colchester when he received the ball on the right and came inside and forced Hornby to make a save at his near post.

Morgan Roberts saw his first league action since joining off the bench and could have marked it with a goal as indecision between Luke Chambers and Tom Dallison allowed Roberts to steal in and have a first-time shot, but it was deflected behind for a corner.
