MATCH REPORT: Swindon (0) Westbury United (3)

A youthful Swindon Town side came up short in the Wiltshire Premier Shield final as they were defeated 3-0 by Westbury United. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam reports from the County Ground.

Westbury held the lead at the break, taking their two big chances of the half as Ryan Bole and Joe Stradling fired home from the edge of the box.

The game was out of sight just three minutes into the second half when Westbury won a penalty, which was converted by Stephen Hulbert.

Town’s wait for a first Wiltshire Premier Shield title since 2010 goes on after this latest defeat, as Westbury become champions of Wiltshire for the first time.

Swindon started the final with a line-up consisting of entirely youth team players, whereas Westbury made three changes from their final league game as Ryan Bole, Daniel Price, and Gary Higdon came in for Jack Biddiscombe, Emmanuel Adepitan, and Callum Demkiv.

Westbury scored with their first real shot after eight minutes when play down the right saw the ball cut back to Bole, he placed the ball first time from the top of the box hard and low into the bottom corner.

The Green Army were an inch away from having a second when a free kick from deep on the left was whipped into the middle, Jacob Hutchings rose highest in the middle but the ball came back off the bar and the offside flag was raised as Harvey Flippance attempted to follow in.

The visitor’s second came midway through the first half as Higdon drove down the right, he held off Jaxon Brown before cutting the ball back to Stradling and his shot took a big deflection to take it into the back of the net as Jack Copland was sent the wrong way.

Swindon could have struck back as a long passing move culminated in Harvey Fox playing the ball into Flynn Hamilton on the edge of the area, he turned sharply but dragged his shot wide of the mark.

A minute later Jaxon Brown moved the ball out to Liam Hutt, who quickly played it on to Joel McGregor, his endeavour paid off when he cut back inside and had a shot that took a strong block to send it behind for a corner.

Jonathan Hill was almost caught out with half time looming as Sonny Hart played a hopeful ball forward which seemed to have gone too long, but bounced high off the turf and almost came down under the crossbar before being tipped over by the Westbury ‘keeper.

Three minutes into the second half Westbury had a penalty after a rash challenge from Hamilton, Stephen Hulbert stepped up to take it and sent Jack Copland the wrong way.

After 57 minutes Dani Gonzalez ran beyond the Westbury defence, turned back inside and found Fletcher Hubbard, he took his shot first time but it span wide of the target.

Hubbard really started to come into the game in the second half, he drove across the field and lost his marker by chopping back inside and tried a curler towards the opposite corner, but Hill made the save.
