MATCH PREVIEW: Swindon v Sutton United

Swindon Town’s quest for a second win of the season continues as they play host to Sutton United following a ten day gap since their last game. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam previews the League Two fixture.

Scott Lindsey’s only win as Town manager came three and a half weeks ago against lowly Rochdale and they were frustrated last time out as for the second consecutive week they failed to claim all three points against a team playing with ten men.

If previous meetings are anything to go by, this should be a prime opportunity to do so as, following reaching the Football League for the first time last season, Swindon did the double over the U’s, with a brace of 2-1 wins.

Lindsey is determined to go out and kickstart his side’s season against Sutton, he said: “I would sooner have played Sunday morning [4th September] if truth be known after the Gillingham game just to get back on the horse as soon as possible.

“It was really frustrating for me and the players as well, and we wanted to put that right, but circumstances didn’t allow that so it was a very frustrating week.”

After a slow start to the season, the South London club have won each of their last three games in all competitions, beating Harrogate and Mansfield either side of an EFL Trophy win against Chelsea U21s.

Lindsey said of Tuesday’s opponents: “They are a really strong side and very similar to last season, in that they are really in your face and get the ball forward.

“They have some real attacking threats and have some guile in the team as well. Will Randall plays off the left and comes in on his right foot and the right-back Rob Milsom gets forward and causes problems.

“They put a lot of balls in the box and they nullify a lot of space, every time the ball moves forward they squeeze the line really well.”

Tuesday will also see two reunions as former-Town players Will Randall and Lewis Ward return to the County Ground and Lindsey had glowing reports on the pair of them.

He said: “I was surprised that he [Randall] came out into Non-League after it didn’t really happen for him at Wolves for whatever reason and he came back up in Sutton’s promotion winning team.

“I really like Will, he is a really good character and he carries the ball really well. He was outstanding for Swindon Town’s youth team, he could win a game on his own.

“We know he [Ward] is a good goalkeeper having seen him up close over the last two years and when he came into the side he did really well, so I hope he doesn’t play.”

In terms of selection, Tomi Adeloye is the only player not available to Scott Lindsey after Reece Devine has had ten days of training and photos showed Rushian Hepburn-Murphy had also returned to the grass.
