MATCH PREVIEW: Swindon v Colchester United

Swindon Town hope to continue their trend of bouncing back after a defeat in League Two as they face a Colchester United side who have had a slow start to the season. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam previews the clash at the County Ground.

Town’s performance last weekend at the Lamex Stadium has been much maligned for a lack of attacking production, but Swindon will take heart from the fact that following their losses against Harrogate and Northampton, they got a result in the next game.

Scott Lindsey was very frustrated last weekend, but remains confident that his team will correct the issues that plagued them against Stevenage.

He said: “For me it [the Stevenage game] was our worst performance, we didn’t create anything and we didn’t have any attacking threat at all throughout the game, which really disappointed me.

“Looking back at the stats it was 70% which counts for nothing, it may as well have been 30% because we did nothing with it.

“We are a new group and we are getting better, we have improved in pretty much every game we have played, and I see it as just a bump in the road.

“We are constantly working on actions in the final third, so it has not changed anything we have done it training, so we were disappointed with how we did.”

Swindon face a Colchester team who have won just two games all season, but new boss Matt Bloomfield got one of those wins last weekend as they defeated Harrogate Town 2-1.

Scott Lindsey said of his opponents: “I think it is early gauge the transition [to Bloomfield], when you are thrown in during the season you have to make an impact straight away.

“I do [believe in the new manager bounce] there is always an initial impact, that first game was probably too soon for him to make an impact, but he had that week before the Harrogate game.

“It is difficult to see what style they are going to play, that is probably easier to see five or six games in when he has been there a little longer.

“I think it is difficult to play a team who have just appointed a manager because you have that initial energy from the players.”

When it comes to injuries there is now a timeline for Angus MacDonald and he will be out for eight to twelve weeks.

However, there was good news for Jonny Williams and Jacob Wakeling as both were cleared after coming off with knocks against Stevenage and Tomi Adeloye has returned to full training and is likely to take part in the Bristol Rovers Papa John’s Trophy match.

If we look to history to assess Swindon’s chances it does not make for good reading as their last win in this fixture was back in 2019 and they have won just two out of their last fifteen against the U’s.
