MATCH PREVIEW: Stockport County vs Swindon

Swindon Town begin their FA Cup campaign this Saturday by heading back to Edgeley Park to face an in-form Stockport County. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam previews the First Round tie.

Swindon are now four games undefeated after an emphatic 5-2 win against Mansfield Town last week and now step away from league action.

However, despite not playing in the league they are still up against a League Two opponent and Scott Lindsey is wary of playing a Stockport team who are in far better form than they were when Swindon last visited in August.

Lindsey said: “I have seen a bit of continuity for a start, when we played them that first time I don’t they he [Dave Challinor] knew what his best back line was.

“He chopped and changed personnel early on in the season and we played them when they he was unsure about what team to pick.

“Since then they have had a bit of continuity, I think they have picked the same side for the last three or four games at least.

“I think that they are starting to hit form and are a different outfit to when we played them last time, but having said that I think we are too.

“I think we played well there, we controlled the game and I was disappointed to come away with only one point

“We conceded from a deep free-kick that was quite late on in the game but on the balance of the game I felt we were the better side and deserved more than just a point.”

Swindon had seemed to catch offensive fire last time out as a slight shift in formation led to them scoring five goals, but Lindsey was insistent his team have always looked strong going forward.

He said: “I firmly believe that, looking at all the stats, we have always been an attacking team.

“People might argue with me as we haven’t always scored lots and lots of goals, but we were always in positions to put the ball in the net.

“Maybe that final bit needed to be better, but we have certainly been a threat in most of our games particularly in recent weeks.

“We have definitely improved, so I have been happy with how we have created opportunities the whole time.”

Lindsey was not forthcoming on which of his loan players would be available for the clash, nor was there any clarity over the condition of Tom Clayton after he came off injured during the first half against Mansfield.

The FA Cup was a great experience for Town last season as they made the third round and played Manchester City at home, however prior to that it has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for Swindon.

Their most recent Third Round appearance prior to this was ten years ago against Wigan Athletic, and would eventually get to the fourth round before being knocked out by Leicester City, and in the intervening ten years had only won twice, against Dartford FC and York City.
