MATCH PREVIEW: Stevenage vs Swindon

Swindon Town will be taking on the team in second place in League Two for the second consecutive weekend as they travel to Hertfordshire to play Stevenage FC. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam previews the encounter.

Having lost late against Northampton, Swindon bounced straight back by putting in a fine performance to beat Newport County 1-0 on Tuesday.

Aside from Rochdale, all of Swindon’s wins this season have been by a single goal but Scott Lindsey said in his press conference yesterday that he sees that as a positive.

He said: “If we had scored our chances at the other end on Tuesday night then we would have won two-nil, the keeper spilled I don’t know how many, I think there were seven before we scored the goal.

“So you can look at it the other way and say we could quite easily have won that game two or three-nil, so I am not going to look at those fine margins as a negative, I think we have to see them as a positive.

“We went to Grimsby away and I thought we were completely dominant and completely deserved the win, I am never going to look at it and think we could have drawn that, I am going to think we could have won it by more.

“Of course not winning those game changes the outlook, that is football, but if you look at Stevenage apart from their win on Tuesday, every game that they have won has been by one goal and they are second in the league.”

Lindsey is also aware of the big task that his side face in going to the Lamex Stadium to take on a very experienced and in form Stevenage.

He said: “They have a really experienced manager in Steve Evans and Paul Raynor his assistant as well and on the pitch.

“They have some real threats at the top of the pitch in Luke Norris and Danny Rose, experience in the middle of the park in [Michael] Bostwick and Reevesy [Jake Reeves] who played here for a spell I believe.

“Then some real strength at the back in [Terence] Vancooten, [Dan] Sweeney, and [Carl] Piergianni.

“It is a very direct team and they will put the ball forward at every opportunity, but nothing too different to what we have faced in past games. But they are very good at it and very efficient.”

On the injury front Angus MacDonald is still waiting to see a specialist to determine whether or not he will require surgery after he dislocated his collarbone, but it was positive news for Tomi Adeloye as he made a partial return to training this week with a view to being in full training by the end of next week.

In terms of a head-to-head record it is very even between the two sides, with both games last season being draws and across the 15 games between the two it is eight wins for Swindon and four for Stevenage.
