Luke Jephcott reveals Swindon spoke about his winning goal before he scored it

Luke Jephcott knew he would get chances from Swindon shooting from distance as he scored the only goal of the game in Swindon’s 1-0 win over Newport. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the match winner after the game.

The goal came early in the second half as Jephcott reacted first to Nick Townsend spilling Ronan Darcy’s strike from range to bag his second for the club.

Jephcott revealed post-match that the team had discussed making sure they followed up any efforts in the moments prior to Jephcott getting the winner.

He said: “We realised in the first half that the ‘keeper had dropped a couple of shots and we needed to take advantage of that by taking more shots and then someone to follow them in.

“I have always been told as I was growing up to make sure that I am following in shots, I think everyone has been taught that as it is one of the first things you learn as a striker, because you never know if they keeper might drop it like he did tonight.

“I was not close enough [to getting a second goal], I don’t know how it got to me to be fair, the ball just came to me and I turned and had a shot and I saw it go just over the bar so I was gutted.

“It makes my job a lot easier when I have quality behind me like Gladwin and Williams, but it is not just them we have quality from back to front and on the bench, we have a real solid squad.”

The goal scorer also said he feels like his understanding is growing all the time with his teammates even if there is still a way to go.

Jephcott said: “I think the way we play really suits me as a striker, you can make 15 or 20 runs a game and not get the ball but the one time you don’t is the time is when the ball will go there, so it is all about continuing to do it all game.

“We talked about getting crosses in and we have put quite a few in tonight and they have defended quite well from crosses.

“We talk about it all the time and then it is just on me to make the runs and we can just get it in there.

“It is obviously still early days, but I am settling in well and the lads have really helped me in that and you can see that on the pitch that we are really gelling as a team.

“I am still getting there fitness wise, Saturday-Tuesday was a shock to the system but I am not too worried about that, the fitness will come with more games.”
