Jonny Williams wants Swindon to make sure this season doesn't get away from them

Jonny Williams wants to make sure that Swindon Town do not let their season meander to a finish and properly compete for promotion. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the Welsh international.

Swindon currently sit in 11th place in League Two, six points off the play-off places with a game in hand, but having failed to win any of their last three, Town’s chances of being involved in the post-season are becoming ever slimmer.

Williams said that having been a part of a late run into the play-offs last season, he wants to see full commitment from his teammates to achieve their ambition of gaining promotion to League One.

Williams said: “I think it is vital that we don’t let the season peter out, last season was seen as so successful but we still had to win our last four games and that could be the case again.

“We have to be resilient mentally and have belief in each other to think that we can achieve that and for sure we will be giving everything.

“All you can ask for as a team is to come off the pitch having given our all and I think that is the case at the moment.

“I don’t think we are far away, in the last two games and even against Doncaster, if we had got the first goal in the second half, I think we would have won those games.

“It is not like we are losing three- or four-nil every week, but it has been frustrating as I don’t think we have got the results we have deserved.

“Playing for Swindon you always have that expectation and other teams respect us, and that does make it hard to break them down.

“But we need to start picking up results, we don’t want to be the best footballing team in the division if we aren’t doing that.”

Williams also said that the margins are fine when you compare Swindon with the top sides, as could be seen from the Carlisle United game last weekend.

He said: “I enjoy the pressure of being one of the experienced players, but in an ideal world you would have a bit more experience around you.

“If you look at the top two or three and see the foundations they have built, they have players who know how to win games.

“Against Carlisle, I thought we were the much better team, but they’re third and we are eleventh and I think we would all much rather be third.

“In the past I have found you need a good blend of experience and youth and I think we are pushing more towards youth.

“There is no reason why we can’t still win games, we just need to show we are the better team and hopefully we are learning how to win games.”
