Jody Morris said being prepared for anything is the biggest lesson he has learned at Swindon

Jody Morris said that adapting on the fly has been one of the most important lessons he has learned since taking charge at Swindon Town. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke with the head coach ahead of the trip to Hartlepool United.

Swindon visit the team sat second from bottom of League Two this weekend in Hartlepool United hoping to end a run of five matches without a win.

Morris said that preparing his team for games has been difficult as often the opposition have greatly altered the way they play when facing Swindon.

He said: “Like I said after the Rochdale game, I felt that we were a threat going forward.

“I had mixed feeling as there was so much wrong with our performance, but we looked like a threat and that we could score.

“I would love that to be the case at the weekend as when we played Rochdale I felt we could have had seven or eight goals.

“If we present like that at the weekend I will be pleased, but at the same time we need to be miles better in possession of the ball.

“One thing I have learned since I have been here is that we can’t look at teams who we feel pass the ball well and expect it to be the same.

“Like with Leyton Orient, they were one of the best footballing sides and after watching a lot of the footage I thought we were going to be meeting a team that plays a lot of football.

“But then we were defending long throws from all over the pitch, and they were the most direct team ever.

“You speak to their coaches afterwards and they said that they wanted to go direct because of how well we had been working getting after the ball and they wanted a long, aerial-type game.

“So whatever you think you are going to be facing that might not be the case, so I think it is important that a lot of the preparation is focused on us.

“You are going to get direct teams in this league, whether you are classed as a footballing team or not, and you have to be prepared to meet that head on.”
