Jacob Wakeling wants Swindon fans to become the team's twelfth man after Sutton win

Jacob Wakeling urged Swindon Town fans to get behind the team and help turn this win into momentum following their 3-2 win against Sutton United. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the goal scorer after the game.

Swindon had looked destined to fall to yet another draw as they entered the dying embers of their League Two clash with Sutton, but Wakeling came off the bench to grab a late winner and move Swindon above their opposition in the table.

The former Leicester City striker said he hopes his goal will give Town’s season a boost and help get the fans on side.

He said: “I think it will kickstart the season, we are six or seven unbeaten now and I know the fans are frustrated but we all need to pull together in the right direction.

“We want to achieve promotion and I was hearing a few boos tonight, but all I have to say is just be patient because we all want to achieve the same thing, promotion.

“For me personally I don’t take much notice of what is going on around me, my sole focus is on affecting the game and helping the team as much as possible.

“They spend their own money, they travel up and down the country and they are entitled to their opinions, but if they can be our twelfth man then it is only going to give the players extra motivation.”

Wakeling managed to find the winner by getting on the end of Frazer Blake-Tracy’s cross in second-half stoppage time and said he had been thinking all game about how he could make his mark.

He said: “As a striker all I want to do is score goals and affect the game as much as I can and luckily I did that tonight.

“It was an unbelievable feeling and I think it was my first 90th minute winner, but I just want to carry on scoring goals and helping the team as much as I can.

“When I am on the bench I am just watching the opposition defenders and figuring out where I might be successful and how I can get into areas and score goals.

“With this team we always believe that we have goals in us and I think we saw that tonight as we didn’t give up and we managed to get the three points.

“It was a really good cross and I just thought that all I had to do was get good contact on it and luckily it went in the back of the net.”
