Jacob Wakeling signs three-year extension with Swindon Town

Swindon Town have announced that striker Jacob Wakeling has extended his contract with the club until June 2026. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam reports on the contract extension.

Wakeling initially joined Swindon in July after his release by Leicester City, when he penned a one-year deal and has since made a fantastic start to life at the County Ground, scoring four goals and getting two assists in eight starts.

Two of Wakeling’s goals proved to be winners against Sutton and Doncaster and he has surpassed all expectations at the start of his Swindon career.

Jacob Wakeling said upon signing his new contract: “I am absolutely delighted to extend my stay here, it was a no brainer for me as soon as it came up and now I can focus on helping the team and playing well.

“I am loving my football here and the fans have been absolutely brilliant with me and I just want to repay them.

“The manager and the backroom staff believe in me and believe in the way that I play and that is helping me to flourish here.

“I don’t have a preferred position, I just want to be in the team because that is why I came to Swindon, so that I could play games and show what I can do.

“I am just grateful for the opportunity to play for Swindon, not many people had heard of me before I came here and I just want to knuckle down and repay the faith that everyone here have shown in me to put me out there on the pitch.”

The 21-year-old came through the ranks at West Bromwich Albion before dropping into Non-League football with Alvechurch, and also spent time on loan at Barrow AFC.

Scott Lindsey said: “It’s great news for the football club and Jake [Wakeling] has been brilliant.

“I have said it from the off that his work ethic is exactly what we need at this football club and he has been a real example of what I want the players to be like.

“He has scored goals through his determination to press high up the pitch, he can connect the ball, we have seen him score with his head and he gets into the right areas.

“We saw him play wide on Saturday and he was always tracking back with the left back and making tackles and used his body.

“He has been outstanding for us and it was the right thing for us to do to reward him with a new deal.”

Technical Director Sandro Di Michele added: “We’re really pleased to offer Jacob this new, long term deal, which I believe shows a real sign of our intent as well as a commitment to building for the future.

“He’s a young player with so much more to offer, and from the moment he arrived at Swindon Town, he’s demonstrated everything we stand for.

“He’s made a superb contribution on the pitch in such a short space of time with his performances, and I’m really excited to see him continue developing under the tutorage of Scott Lindsey.”
