Gavin Gunning said Charlie Austin looked a cut above League Two level in Swindon's big win

Gavin Gunning said that Charlie Austin showed that he was well above League Two level as Swindon ran rampant with a 5-0 win against Grimsby. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the interim-head coach after the game.

Charlie Austin opened the scoring before the rout before Marcel Lavinier, Jonny Williams, Ronan Darcy, and Saidou Khan all notched after the break in a memorable display at the County Ground.

Gunning said that Austin’s wasn’t a world class performance, but he and many others showed that they were well above League Two level.

He said: “ “He [Austin] was good. He wasn’t world class or anything but it was a very good performance and I think he looked probably a level above this league.

“But, we had a few lads who played like they were above the level today.

“When you have a player who went and played in the Premier League and comes back down you hope he will show he is above the level and he did that for us today.

“When you have Charlie in the team, to get his full effect in the game, you want him to draw the centre halves out.

“Sometimes we lent into that, sometimes we went down the sides and even over the press when we had to

“He [Austin] did really well when he linked the play and it allowed us to play with quick transitions and to be fair it was pretty effective.”

Gunning also said that he switched things around at half-time which helped Swindon exploit the spaces Grimsby were leaving.

He said: “I just changed everything at half-time because there is no point in letting the game go stale when they have ten-men.

“When instead you can see what you want and change it there and then and it made things happen.

“He [Hutton] was a lot better when we flipped to a three at the back and we went with wing-backs.

“We opened the space out and left the channel free for him to walk into and Hutton worked well when we did that.

“I am always busy working and trying to get the right formation so that we can punish the opposition.

“Where we can be and if we are weak in transition then where can we fill the spaces so you can’t enjoy the performance.”
