David Flitcroft wants "three or four" more additions at Swindon Town

Swindon Town boss David Flitcroft thinks his side can still benefit from another “three to four” new additions at the club before summer transfer window shuts.

Following the end of last season, Town faced a huge rebuilding job in terms of player recruitment, due to a raft of playing staff departing the club, either at the expiration of their contract, or the end of a loan at the County Ground.

Nine new faces have arrived over the course of the summer so far, seven on a permanent deal and two on loan, and Swindon now have a much healthier squad size, of 22 players.

Flitcroft has not stated the exact positions he thinks the club need to bring in, however Town do only have one recognised right-back, three centre-backs and three wingers, while there is concrete interest in Wigan’s Kaiyne Woolery, a striker.

However, Jake Evans and Tom Smith, both natural central midfielders, have been tested out at right and left-back respectively by Flitcroft while Brophy, used as a winger by the new boss, is also capable at left-back.

Despite Evans’ capabilities at right-back though, Flitcroft has taken two right-sided defenders on trial this pre-season. The first, Jack Bainbridge, left the club without being offered a deal while a second, unidentified, also seems to have been shown the door.

Flitcroft did offer contracts to two other trialists, Zavon Hines and Jordan Slew, however an agreement could not be reached with the former while Slew decided to go on trial at Mansfield instead due to the town being close to his house and the Stags could offer the forward better money.

“I think we’re light as a squad,” Flitcroft told BBC Radio Wiltshire.

“We do still need three or four, we’ve got nine in and we’ve built that very well in terms of what we’ve been able to bring in and add to the squad and try to bring the squad together, but we’re still short.

“Especially when you look at the opening month of fixtures, which is really important that we go on with our potential recruitment and keep working away at that.

“I am seeing a slacking off from football clubs that have took players on tour, have come back and realised it might not be for them so there is a wrestle with a few other clubs, but there definitely is now a period where players that we couldn’t have got a few weeks ago, and out of contract players, will potentially be out there for us to try and sign for Swindon Town.

“I’ve maintained right through that I only want players that want to commit to us and commit to Swindon Town and we’ve worked really hard up to now on.”
