A Look Back at Swindon Town's 2017/18 Campaign

The end of the 2017/18 campaign is upon us, with the Football League play-offs beginning for those lucky enough to finish inside their respective division’s play-off zones.

For Swindon Town in League Two, the play-offs are a distant memory, with a top-half finish the best Phil Brown’s side could manage this season. Whilst others are battling for promotion via the play-offs, attention at the County Ground will be turning to the summer, which provides Swindon an opportunity to reflect on the year and how they can improve next season.

Brown was only appointed in March, with the ex-Hull City boss coming in to replace Dave Flitcroft, who had left for Mansfield Town, one of Swindon’s play-off rivals at the time.

One question Brown will be asking his squad as they debrief, is if they ever felt the play-offs were a possibility, to which the answer should be absolutely.

Following back to back victories at the end of January, Swindon were sitting 6th in the table with 50 points to their name, two points clear of Exeter City, who are currently priced at 4/1 to win promotion with bet365’s football betting market. The Grecians had two games in hand over Swindon at that stage, but Flitcroft’s side were also clear of Lincoln City at that point, who are also still in promotion contention.

Of course, Flitcroft’s departure has certainly dented Swindon’s chance of reaching the play-offs, but the position the Robins were in heading into February was the perfect opportunity for them to push on.

However, form over the course of March and April cost Swindon, who managed to pick up just a single victory over the course of those two months, with April proving to be a winless month for Brown.

That will be defined as the key period of the season when Swindon faltered, whilst others around them found their form and handed themselves a chance of competing for League One football.

Brown will be looking for ways to resolve the issues he has inherited at Swindon, with the need for a goalscorer becoming great. This year, Luke Norris has been the man to spearhead the attack for Swindon this season, but he is not nearly as prolific as some of League Two’s top strikers.

Billy Kee at Accrington Stanley has fired them to promotion, whilst Luton Town, another team promoted automatically, have once again had Danny Hylton to score the goals to get them competing at the top of the table.

Next season is going to be a big one for Brown, who will be overseeing his first full campaign at the County Ground. The experienced manager needs to address a number of issues, but as always, the transfer window and the work Swindon do there is going to be absolutely key. League Two is a highly competitive league, but there isn’t much between sides competing in the top half of the table and a Billy Kee or Danny Hylton would’ve made all the difference this season.

Brown needs to make sure his summer transfer business is right, and then he can start planning Swindon’s route back up the footballing ladder.
