Local businesses create a pocket watch to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee

Two of our local treasures have produced a limited edition pocket watch to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in recognition of Swindon's railway connections.

STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway, and Swindon Jewellers, Deacon & Son have worked together on the time piece.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) once owned a wide variety of time-keeping pieces, from guards’ pocket watches and mantel clocks, to giant clocks on stations and the famous steam-powered hooter at Swindon Works.

Keeping accurate time was important to the GWR – to keep trains running on time for customers and to make sure GWR employees got to work on time.

The three versions of the 17 jewel GWR pocket watch are: the Open Face (Chrome plated), the Chrome plated Half Hunter and the Gold plated Half Hunter and they are priced between £69.95 and £99.99.

There will also be a fourth version, very special limited edition of only ten watches made of 9 carat gold with precision Swiss movement. This will be released on Jubilee Day, 5 June, priced at £1,000 each.

The pocket watches will be on sale at both the museum in Kemble Drive and Deacons in Wood Street from Saturday 14 April, 9am, from Deacons in Old Town and 10am, from STEAM Museum at Churchward.
