Wiltshire's only standard gauge heritage railway
We are now closed for our annual winter maintenance period.
and will reopen for our first full weekend on Friday 29 March 2024
Meanwhile, our Permanent Way team are working hard in preparation for when we reopen.
And our Building and Works department are making progress on the new ticket office and shop.
Our First Full Weekend Service Of The Year!
PLEASE NOTE: Owing to ongoing engineering works, the train will not stop at Taw Valley Halt for passengers to board or alight. Please catch the train from Blunsdon and consider timing your arrival later in the day to avoid congestion in the car park between 10.30 and 12.30pm. Trains run every 40 minutes throughout the day.
Welcome to the S&CR
The S&CR is entirely built, run and managed by volunteers. It was one of the first heritage railways to undertake the complete reconstruction of a standard-gauge railway with no legacy of track or buildings.
Blunsdon is the main 'visitor centre', with car parking, Whistle Stop Cafe, picnic area, shop etc., while Hayes Knoll gives visitors the opportunity to see various restoration projects progressing in the engine shed.
Motive Power
Motive power is provided by Steam or Diesel locomotives as available.
Diesels in our home fleet include examples of ex-BR Classes 03, Class 08 and a Class 73 electro diesel E6003 'Sir Herbert Walker', plus industrials. Our guest steam locomotive for this year is a 1918 Kerr Stuart 0-4-0, aptly named - 'Willy the Well-Tank'.
See our What's on Next List to find out when we are running.

Return to Cricklade
Over South Meadow Lane and Onwards!
History has now been made. We have successfully passed the physical and psychological barrier of South Meadow Lane and track is now on the ground farther north than at any time in the last 60 years.
Following many months of clearance activity and preparation we have now laid track to get as far as our initial Phase 1 target of Farfield Lane cutting. From the end of this section, the tower of Cricklade church is within sight!
We are still working within our Phase 1 budget, and estimate that a further £8000 is required to complete the necessary drainage, fencing and security gating. This will then allow us to operate public trains over this extension later in 2024.
