How To Take Care of Your Upholstery: A Quick Guide

Bespoke upholstery makes your rooms leave a more personal touch in your home, aside from being functional and pleasing to the eye. Naturally, you would want to maintain them in the best condition as possible. Read on to know how to take care of your bespoke upholstery.

Before anything else, check the label.

Check the label or sticker of your upholstery so that you’ll know how to clean it and which cleaning products to use. Here’s the code:

  • W - use only water-based products
  • P - you can only dry-clean your upholstery
  • SW/SP - you can use water-based detergents or dry-clean it.
  • X - you can’t clean it by yourself—you’ll need professional help.

Vacuum it weekly.

Take out the vacuum and give your upholstery a thorough clean once a week. This way, debris would be taken out and won’t have the chance to accumulate and seep into the fabric, which could wear it out. Corners and crevices would be easier to reach too.

Keep them in shape.

Over time, you would see that the cushions would sag—one way for them to stay in shape is to plump them up. Do this every night after a whole day of being used.

Protection is key.

Protect your upholstery from fluids like oil and sweat by covering them. Use arm covers, blankets and throws for protection.

When picking a place for your upholstery, choose a spot that sunlight or direct heat won't reach, no matter the time of day, to prevent cracks from forming and colours from fading.

Keep it safe from your furry friends.

Use throws to keep pet hairs from the upholstery—throws that are durable enough to be washed frequently. If that is not possible, remove pet hairs by using a lint roller or running your rubber-gloved hands over the upholstery and dipping them in hot water.

Always watch out for stains.

If you eat meals on your couch, you increase the chances of having it stained. Blankets and throws can be good covers but they may still be not good enough. Use white vinegar to remove the stains followed by mild detergent and water mixture to remove the sour smell. Do this as soon as possible to remove the stain easier.
