Swindon Wildcat's confirm their charity for their annual Teddy Bear Toss

Swindon Wildcats are delighted to confirm that their annual Teddy Bear Toss taking place this weekend will be in aid of Barnardo’s, the UK’s leading children’s charity.

Last year Barnardo’s supported around 300,000 children, young people, parents and carers at more than 1,000 services across the UK. The charity supports vulnerable children, including those who are young carers, care leavers, foster carers and adoptive parents. The charity also supports children and young people to develop skills through training and runs parenting classes.

Barnardo’s have come a long way since their founder, Thomas Barnardo set up a ‘ragged school’ to help disadvantaged children in 1867.

They don’t abandon children because of who they are or what they’ve done. They listen to them, fight for their rights and do whatever it takes to protect and support them – because they believe that all children have the right to a happy and healthy life.

At a time when more young people need specialist help with complex issues like sexual abuse, mental health problems and serious violence, their work is more vital than ever.

Times have changed and they've changed with them, and their belief in the potential of every child remains.

In 2018-19 Barnardo’s directly supported more than 294,300 children, young people, parents and carers.

This includes:

  • 84,500 through individual work
  • 181,100 through our children’s centres and family hubs
  • 28,700 through our school-based programmes

Their plan through to 2025 is to build stronger families, safer childhoods and positive futures for young people.

With the dedication and expertise of around 8,000 staff, 20,000 volunteers and their partners, Barnardo’s continue to develop radical solutions to identify vulnerable children, intervene early and support them to work towards a positive future.

The teddies you donate at this weekend’s game will go a long way in supporting children, young people, parents and carers at the start of the latest decade.

And remember:

  • Buy a new teddy bear or two (no taller than 12 inches preferably) which MUST include a CE label (which ensures that the manufacturer has checked that these products meet EU safety, health or environmental requirements).
  • Place it in a clear plastic bag (for protection from the surface of the ice) and tie the top closed.
  • Wait for the first Wildcats goal of the game to be scored (of course, you should always also continue cheering the team on until we score!)
  • Throw your teddy on to the ice rink as soon as the goal goes in! Whether you’re Rink-side or in the balcony, MAKE THE FUR FLY! If the Wildcats fail to score during the 60-minutes, fans will toss the teddy bears anyway – straight after the final buzzer

We work to change the lives of vulnerable children in the UK and every year we help thousands of families to build a better future. But we cannot do it without you. Visit http://www.barnardos.org.uk to find out how you can get involved. Registered charity No. 216250 and SC037605
