Total Guide to Sledging in Swindon

Snow day anyone? That's right, the cold snap has officially hit Swindon and although it may be causing disruption to travel and schools for some, the rest of the town are dusting off their toboggans, throwing on their woollies and taking advantage of their new winter playground!

Whether your vehicle of choice is a plastic sledge, an old lilo or even your mums metal oven tray (Swindon's very resourceful in Winter) you're going to need a place to test drive your new whip.

Luckily for us, Swindon has plenty of locations for a sledging adventure. From hills, country parks and even the odd golf course, we run down the best sledging spots in and around town:

Liddington

Liddington

Go big or go home. First up on our list is the mightiest slope of them all - Liddington Hill!

For all of you thrill seekers out there, this place is ideal!  Get set for a day of teeth-chatteringly fast tobogganing!

Popular with snow sports enthusiasts, don't be surprised if you feel yourself getting a little bit competitive as you race to the bottom.

Be warned though, Liddington might be a great day out but quite hard to get to during the bad weather. It's best to bear in mind what will happen if you get stranded, chances are it'll be a long chilly walk home...and somebody has to pull the sledge.

Lydiard Park

Lydiard Park

To the west of the town we have Lydiard Park. Home to acres of snow dusted parkland and some of the best wintery woodland areas Swindon has to offer.

For a great family day out head towards the fields surrounding the Georgian manor house and get ready for sledging galore, snow ball fights and the occasional snow angel. (Just steer clear of the lake)

Then top your trip off by paying a visit to the nature café for a well earned hot chocolate to warm you up. All of these activities are sure to be a hit with the whole family and there's even a doggy friendly children's play area.

Coate Water

Coate Water

The slopes over in Coate Water are some of the most popular destinations to take your toboggan or tea tray.

Not only do they provide some pretty lengthy and incredibly speedy runs but there's also plenty of them, so you don't have to worry about over-crowding or missing a turn. Just be careful of any fences or trees found at the bottom of slopes though- we learnt that this the hard way.

Once you've worn yourself out, there’s even a handy kiosk close by for that hot drink to warm the cockles or an energy boosting snack.

Shaw Hill

Shaw Hill

For some snowy action that involves a make shift sledge, soggy socks and a well earned cup of hot chocolate afterwards, look for the word “hill” in the title and chances are you’re on to a winner.

Ever popular with West Swindoners, Shaw Hill is steep enough for a quick run to the bottom but looks gentle enough for mums to have a go too.

The Lawn

The Lawn

If you're looking for some gentler slopes for the little ones to enjoy, then head down to The Lawn in Old Town.

Although a great family location, this spot does get pretty crowded, so be prepared to slalom your way around unsuspecting toddlers and other snowy obstacles.

Toothill Park

Toothill Park

Toothill Park over in West Swindon is dotted with loads of green open spaces, so finding a great sledging spot shouldn't be too difficult.

Just keep an eye out for any wayward children...dogs...and elderly residents.

Snodshill - Eldene

Snodshill - Eldene

An ever-reliable slope for East Swindoners; Snodshill is open and grassy, with an incline that will get even the most sluggish of sledge going!

Barbury Castle

Barbury Castle

Be warned, our last sledging destination isn't for the faint hearted!

Barbury Castle not only offers a stunning view of the local countryside but when the white stuff falls, it transforms itself into Swindon's answer to St. Moritz.

The Castle Country Park lies about 5 miles south of Swindon and is perfect for anyone after some spectacular views whilst sliding down the side of a ruddy big slope.

Although it might be slightly further afield, it's still well worth the trip!
