Portafina Joins the Fight to Raise Awareness of Diabetes

Portafina, a financial company based in Kent, is helping to raise awareness of diabetes and funds to support research into its treatment. Now, they are offering you the chance to do the same.

Diabetes is a serious health condition, and around four million people in the UK are thought to be affected. For Portafina’s Managing Director, Jamie Smith Thompson, diabetes is a condition that is close to home. Mr. Smith Thompson’s daughter has type one diabetes, and he has seen how detrimental it can be to everyday life. That is why he has set up a number of fundraising events, including a cycle ride, to help support the cause.

Diabetes is a condition that affects how the body regulates blood sugar levels. Type one diabetes is caused by the pancreas not being able to produce enough insulin, which is what helps cells use glucose as fuel. If cells can’t access the glucose in the body, over time, it builds up to higher than normal levels and causes health problems. Type two diabetes involves an inability to use insulin as the body should, and the pancreas can make too much, or too little, to compensate.

Type two diabetes can be managed through lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating and exercise. Type one is rarer, harder to treat, and usually begins in youth. It is estimated that there are 20,000 children under fifteen who are living with the illness.

Portafina is a growing business that is lending its weight to support JDRF, the leading charitable funder of diabetes- based research. JDRF are confident that better treatments can be found, and that one day there will be a cure for diabetes. However, until more funding is raised for research, that time might be a long way off.
