Meet our latest TGt Meets...Joel Smedley, new Personal Trainer at David Lloyd Swindon. Joel told us all his tips and tricks on how to stay fit and healthy and how David Lloyd can help you achieve your fitness goals.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

My life has always revolved around fitness. My love for training grew through football and working with strength and conditioning coaches has inspired me to want to work with athletes to get them to the top of their game. I love working with people and helping them too achieve their goals. It’s very rewarding. Currently Studying for a degree in Sport science, whilst playing football for Chippenham Town.

How did you turn your passion for fitness into a career?

After working within David Lloyd in various roles over the last 3 years I was given the opportunity to progress onto personal training which I believe is the perfect step forward in my career.

Have you always been a personal trainer?

No, along with playing football I used to be a part of the kids club team at David Lloyd coaching our young members in all different sports! After that I moved onto a role as a health and fitness coach.

What do you love about being a personal trainer? 

  • Achieving greatness in every client!
  • Seeing clients happy with the Mental and physical progress and changes that they are making in their lifestyle
  • Meeting and talking to new people every day
  • Being apart of the journey for the clients
  • Turning something I do everyday into my work
  • Being apart of someone’s journey and supporting them along the way.

What are your most rewarding experiences with a client?

Seeing clients happy and confident within themselves and their bodies is one of the most rewarding experiences you can achieve.

If someone is looking to get fit and healthy, how can David Lloyd help?

With the variety of activities David Lloyd offers for all ages you can really get stuck into something that you will enjoy whilst getting massive health benefits from.

As well as the support and guidance around you with people like me and many others, you can really change your lifestyle for the better.

What are your tips for people who are looking to get in shape?

Consistency is key! Being focused and dedicating some time to bettering your lifestyle is the most important factor. Having a set programme or training schedule will help with this.

Nutrition is massive, if you’re not getting this right you won’t get the results you want!

What are some mistakes people make when training/working towards a weight or fitness goal?

Constantly standing on the scales, your weight will change daily depending on how much food and drink you have had that day, it’s best to give it at least 2-4 weeks between each weigh in.

How do David Lloyd’s fitness classes help those who lack confidence when working out?

The instructors are brilliant, they can help If you are unsure on how to perform exercises, if you are a newbie, they will help you feel more comfortable and run you through a typical class and answer any questions you may have. The classes are open to all age ranges, abilities, and exercise backgrounds. There are also a lot of people in the room, therefore I promise you no one is judging you!
